I am genuinely content with my SSL plugs, really, its all I use for mixing these days (comp/lim/gate etc) for Modfx I use other stuff ofc, but Modulate8 from SSL is great as are their delays and stuff.

But I am not paying 300 for a plugin anymore, since they will be on sale at some point sooner than later.

It's funny, I've lost almost all interest in buying stuff once I was producing and finishing a lot of music all the time. That’s a pretty short list compared to compressors and EQs…

yeah, but how many do you need? It's not like we had a rack of 22 just simple compressors back in the day, let alone multi band... even at f'ing sunset sound or Conway etc, unless you wanted to pay extra for a side car rolled in....

and you can multi instantiate any one on that list you want... it's not like you got just one Waves C6 instantiation on a session kinda thing...

ONE of those has got to get it done for you, and while I have used some of those over the years, whatever... I don't know what the ssl one in particular brings to the table the others don't for the most part... so if you have any of those, or 2 of them... I'd imagine reading the manual and whatnot will get you where you need to be probably, (not even bringing up some the new tools that work on x-y-z planes on this etc)....

I've just never have heard in my life anyone say: "hey man, you GOT to get the ssl multi band compressor plugin... it has changed everything for me...." outside of whoever people ssl may slap on their website who used it once and gave a 'testimonial' in exchange for something else you know what I mean?

I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying if you have others, I'd imagine there isn't much that is bringing to the table imaginably if you were to fully understand the tools you already have on hand. Probably the stock stuff in your daw is just as good and capable (and that's not knowing your daw...). The ssl stuff is fine, but scratching my chin on looking at it last night, and whatever my mb needs are on that, I don't know if I would install it for free with it taking up a mere 50mb of drive space kinda thing.... I just don't know what it would do for me that I can't already get done, and I'd imagine the same for you... all I'm saying..

i also remember one that received a boat load of hardware over the years for free then auctioned it all off (what they decided not to keep for themselves) to the highest bidder lol if not mistaken offered for a fee would sign the units before shipment lol

If you need another multi band comp when you already have 5 one be can only deduce one doesn’t have a scooby doo what they actually need one for.

Yeah, I quickly glanced at ez's list there, and I got 4 or 5 of them I think.. and probably more not installed (as again, I DON'T NEED THEM ).... between the FabFilter, some other colorful Lindell stuff, stock, and whatnot... I'm good.. I know at some point I gonna enter or explore the TDR world more for other reasons, but a lot of that is probably because our friends here don't stop talking about them, which is cool, and I respect their opinion and whatnot... but again, hell, how many records have we made without them? Could they get me someplace faster the previous? if so, cool... and great. is the lack of them making everything I've ever done suck? maybe, I don't know...

so in due time, and only if they are close to nothing in cost... as I've managed to feed myself without them so far.

so yeah, obviously a thread like this is gonna create fomo and hoarding, which is fun and creates interesting conversations and I learn things and honestly HAVE found some tools that have been great....

but honestly, I'm really personally just trying to find the few tools that can do a lot given if I spend the time to know them and so forth.... I'm not collecting coded compressors you know? I don't necessarily care if UAD's LA2a is better then some other one I have or whatnot... unless my song has ONE track on it, and it relies on that kinda thing and I have to damn nail it....like if I had Paul Simon playing acoustic in my room, and I gotta use one, and right now, and that's it or whatever or forever... f'it.

95 times out of hundred, I'm sure whatever is stock in Logic or Ableton or whatever daw I'm using that day and will get it done if that's all I have... as we all know a lot of it is bullsh1t....

not saying different plugins are inspiring, or special... or you really can lean on.... I'm just saying any 'flash sale' on something is usually something you can pass on... but we all have different needs which I respect... and one man's multi band limiter may be extremely important to them and their sound and output, and the same one could be worthless to me or anyone else....

less is better, or rather, picking a good lane (even if it's not the 'bestest ever'), and knowing it, is far better than having them all... even for free....as we don't have the ability to wrap our brains around the nuances of the 0's and 1's and user interfaces and use case scenarios, and combinatorial weight of all of them, and it's waste of time, money, drive space, stupid... and exhausting.

I could deal with 2 compressors for the rest of my life probably. done.

of course I got more, but I'm not looking to pile on...and spend more money on nonsense...even if it is just $30.

And while I will spend that on a Soundtoys thing, or GForce instrument or something... that's because it's probably gonna make a difference in the choices I make, or inspire me to extend elsewhere, or actually help create art for me. ..and maybe that SSL compressor IS 'that' analogously for someone else.... I just don't imagine it is, or certainly doesn't sound like it is for you...

Straight into the Neve 1073, LA2A , 1176 on the insert and hit record…Sounds like a record when I play it back…then rinse and repeat with bass..etc…

I can work fast and get pleasing results…should have done it years ago…

Have you played around with the order of the LA2A and 1176? I've been thinking of getting an LA2A clone and wondering what order with my 1176 clone.

Do you put the bass and electric guitars through both compressors too?

used in tandem the old standard is the 76 lightly with fast attack and release to catch the peaks and then the 2A... opto being slower to smooth out. mainly used on vocals but can work on most anything really

Yeah thats the general consensus I've been reading but some like EZ do prefer the 2A first. I think the old standard would suit me better as I do very shouty and soft "singing".

It will be a total experiment and not sure I need the 2A on vocal as I'm very happy with just a 76. But I'll use the 2A on something, acoustic and/or bass I'm sure will sound nice.

All depends….on electric I hardly compress at all depending on the tone…

1176 first then LA2A on vocals works great…

On bass LA2A on its own can work great…

yeah, that's the way I generally would do it for a lot, obviously it depends on the source and what you are trying to do, and I tend to like eq'ing into the compressors often.... or stacking multiple of the same compressors for certain things (generally the 1176's for real obliterated aggression on certain parts)... but hey, again, this all depends on what you are trying to capture and do.... I don't think I would stack that compression lineup that way for the Paul Simon example I was giving earlier...

yeah i tend to do surgical (if needed) before comps but many times the compression will round off tops so i may boost some (if needed) after comps to remedy... like a slight high shelf to get a bit of transient edge back
