New Sweetwater Studios Relaunches Recording Workshop Series

Sweetwater Studios Relaunches Recording Workshop Series

Spacious, state-of-the-art recording complex serves up hands-on, in-person studio education safely

Sweetwater Studios, the recording studio arm of music retailer Sweetwater Sound has announced that they will be relaunching their in-person Recording Workshop series and once again offer peerless opportunities for learning alongside working artists and engineers in a safe, controlled environment. The first workshop will be with improvisational jazz-rock band Marbin and will be focused specifically on tracking full ensembles in a live environment. The workshop will take place from Saturday April 10 to Sunday April 11 from 10am to 5pm, with a cost of $595 per person. Space is limited for safety. All registration info can be found here.

As a regular part of operations at Sweetwater Studios for the past several years, The Recording Workshop Series has given hundreds of aspiring engineers and hobbyist musicians the chance to work and learn alongside their heroes. The series was temporarily suspended in 2020 alongside all other live music events as part of the national lockdowns associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, however by taking ample safety precautions the studio has been able to relaunch the series for the new year. “The health and safety of our customers is absolutely paramount to us, so it was incredibly important for us to ensure that all necessary steps are being taken to assure that,” said Sweetwater Studios Manager Thad Tegtmeyer, “With the correct precautions in place however, we’re thrilled that we’re able to reintroduce the kind of welcoming, live events that are such an important part of the Sweetwater experience.”

Upcoming workshops, which also include a session with the Stu Hamm Trio May 6-8, will continue in the tradition that Sweetwater Studios has established of providing memorable experiences with working musicians, and access to the kind of environments and equipment that most would associate with major recording artists. “A big part of Sweetwater Studios is we want our resources to be open to everyone,” explained Sweetwater Studios Producer/Engineer Shawn Dealey. “It’s not about just offering the best rooms and the best equipment, it’s about showing people that their musical dreams are achievable and that they can make them come true at Sweetwater.”

New AES Standards Webinar Series

Audio Standards and Interoperability in a Connected World Take the Stage in AES Standards Webinar Series

New initiative from the AES Standards Committee shines a light on Audio Standards development, while seeking input and experience from the global audio community

The Audio Engineering Society has announced a series of webinars hosted by the AES Standards Committee that will illuminate the inner workings of the often complex, yet necessary, set of rules by which engineers and equipment manufacturers abide and the increasingly important role of the AES and its work to establish audio standards and practices that ensure interoperability worldwide. AES members may register for the Zoom webinar for live interaction with the presenters, while non-members may watch a live stream of the event on the AES YouTube channel: The webinar will also provide opportunities for individuals to become involved in the ongoing proposal and establishment of working audio protocols.

The first three webinars in the AES Standards series have been announced, each outlining a different AES standard currently in development. The first event will take place on March 29 at 12:00 noon, ET, and will discuss the current development of a procedure for loudspeaker test and measurement using a music simulation test signal called M-Noise. Presenters Merlijn Van Veen and Roger Schwenke, co-chairs of the SC-04-03-A Task Group, will briefly explore the background and impetus for this project. The AES Standards procedure will be explained and demonstrated, including challenges faced by the SC-04-03-A Task Group and how the Group’s activities have inspired development within other standard bodies. The session will close with a description of the remaining development steps and how interested individuals can get involved.

In the second event, taking place May 17, Nicolas Sturmel will discuss using AES67 over wide area networks – the focus of the SC-02-12-M Task Group. On July 26 Bill Whitlock will discuss ongoing initiatives on analog system interconnection standards in the SC-05-05 Working Group. In the fourth webinar on September 20, Anthony Kuzub will discuss the new AES72 standard from SC-05-02 for transporting either analog or digital audio over quad twisted pair cable, including documentation of RJ45 connector pin-outs.

Visit the AES Standards Blog for Standards news, Working Group status reports, the schedule of upcoming events, webinar registration and more.

22nd July 2021 to 24th July 2021 12:00 AM to 12:00 AM
New 2021 AES Education Convention

Please join us July 22-24, 2021, in Murfreesboro and Nashville, Tennessee, for three days of workshops, papers and events focused on audio education, including curricular resources, teaching strategies and professional development for—and from--industry trainers, faculty and staff who are active instructors at the high-school, undergraduate, graduate and professional levels.

The pace of industrial, technical and social change has only accelerated since MTSU hosted the first AES Education Conference in the summer of 2013. Distance and online learning are no longer niche practices. Machine learning and intelligent automation influence many aspects of media production. The economics and underlying technologies for entertainment and communication continue to evolve rapidly, affecting our students and their career prospects. In this environment, there's a lot for us to discuss and learn from each other.

Current global conditions make it impossible for the Audio Education Conference to proceed as planned this summer. Therefore, the full three-day conference in Tennessee will be delayed by one year. Though we must wait to meet again in person, the program of workshops, papers and special events in 2021 will be stronger and more relevant than ever. Meanwhile, we are developing plans for an online symposium, on or near the original conference dates, with a series of presentations about remote delivery of audio and music instruction. Information about this online event will be posted here and distributed through AES social media channels as the details become available.

New Superbooth 2021

Due to the present health situation, we have decided to move Superbooth21 to September. The mixture of mutual respect, effective vaccination processes and everyone being more outdoors, awakens strong hope that we will be able to meet again in late summer.
For September 15-18, 2021 we are planning a four day "Safety First Edition." Some parts of the program will happen outside in the green surrounding of the FEZ. We will open new areas and stations, where you can explore exhibitors, concerts and presentations under the summer sky.

Due to the safety restrictions, exhibitoons floors within the building will be reduced and we will probably having a hard time to fulfill all ticket requests. But with all respect to the given circumstances, we want to provide an event which will create some confidence and fun with music again for all of us.

New Musikmesse 2021

New Date Musikmesse: 22.–24.10.2021

Strengthening the creative industries: from 2021, the Musikmesse will be held in October parallel to the Frankfurt Book Fair and will cooperate with the Frankfurt Book Fair's creative hub THE ARTS+.

Strong partnership and new perspectives

Through its collaboration with THE ARTS+, Musikmesse has completed an important stage on an evolutionary process begun many years ago. Musikmesse was launched in 1980 as a classic product show focusing on instruments and sheet music. Since then, it has been opened up continuously to a variety of new themes and will now emphasise more than ever before the social and economic significance of music, as well as the musical experience. As always, Musikmesse at Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Centre will offer the best presentation setting for all companies of the music business, plus the chance to present their brands within the framework of the complementary programme of events.

In the future, too, Frankfurter Buchmesse (20 to 24 October 2021) and Musikmesse (22 to 24 October 2021) will remain independent events, each with their own individual target groups and content.

Further information about the project will be announced in the near future.
