I have a mic I like quite a bit - JZ V67. It was cheapish, yeah ($700), but it sounds nice to me, and I've gone through many a mic over the years, some actually quite nice and some cheap garbage. This one sits as a 7 of ten on my history of mics.

See above.

To me, the Solo gets you just far enough into the UAD ecosystem to annoy you when you quickly reach its limit.
The thing is (and I really don't mean this as a knock to anyone that loves them), I avoid UA completely. Only ever bought one plug from them (back in the early days of their price meltdown) and just wasn't that impressed. Maybe because it was a synth (opal) and not a studio type plugin. I would have thought about trying something else, but then the company just kind of got wacky. I didn't like them when they were elitist, and I like them less now.

@

do u have a mic?
I would maybe stretch to a neve 88m. I heared recordings through it and it sound really good.
When this is not possible an uad solo is a good bet.
Never heared the heritage. Maybe it would make sense to shoot it out against whatever else is possible.
I've never heard it before either. The only sound related post on the thread here is from someone who I tend to trust, though they don't post much. I read through their earlier posts and agree with a lot of what they have to say. They went from an SSL interface to the Heritage and really like it.
Also, @
andersmv
did a walk through with it and I really liked the sound of the mix he got at the end of the video, and I find his approach in the reviews he does pretty straight forward and - for lack of a better phrase - non-shilly.
Also also, SOS, MusicRadar and MusicTech all seem to like it. So there's that. I sort of trust SOS.
Also also also, and not least, I truly am a space, and the Heritage purchase gives one access to all their plugins as well and has onboard DSP that you can use to monitor or destructively mix into. I have demoed their plugins and - while they are new to the software side of things - I liked the sound of their coding a fair bit more than UA (no offense to anyone and not saying that is correct, if there is such a thing). The plugin package triggers my 'we love our preciousses' button.
The cheap one (that is $650) has only one channel in and one pre, and I kind of trust a 650 dollar interface more that only has one channel at that price, if that makes sense.

Itβs a tough price point. I would try and maximize quality on the capture side for the money. Pick the thing that has the best mic pre and conversion. Thereβs nothing wrong with a solo, but Iβve read that the quality of the pre and conversion is stepped up quite a bit at the twin x level. You donβt want to spend $$$ to get something roughly the same quality as the scarlet. Just my 2 cents. I would also consider saving a few extra $$$ to get the next level up if possible.
Go for a clean and quality capture and do everything else in the box.
I totally agree. I think the Scarlett has kind of started to shit the bed. my MOTU is pretty cheap and sounds great and has very low latency, which I like. I pulled the Scarlett out of a dusty closet for use in silent recording, and the sound is - like - bad. Weird digital phone style artifacts every few minutes (I tried different power supplies and USB cables). And my mic sounds like a different mic through it. So - yeah.
I would spend more, but we have been having torrential rain lately, and roof sprung a leak, and four different roofers came out to give quotes on fixing it and have all said - you need a new roof. So - that sucks. Unexpected $20k to the housing gods. :/
Thus the budget.

Why not get a mic preamp to connect to the Scarlett? What generation is the Scarlett? The specs outside the pres on Focusrite stuff are quite good.
For under 700 you could add something like one of these
* Cranborn EC1
* Heritage HA73 Elite
* Golden Age Premier PRE-73 or PREQ-73
* Warm Audio WA73 or TB12
etc.
See above. The Heritage pre in this guy has been getting good press. And I literally never use more than one channel because I use mic ONLY for vocal anymore.
And, I am kind of wanting as little hardware as I can get away with. I'm just sick of cables and connectors and thinking about impedance and blah blah. I am stuck between being a hardware hater and acknowledging that it has it's place that - so far - is kind of irreplaceable.
Nod to EZ. But your patchbay triggers my PTSD, EZ.

ya know... limiting oneself to an amount such as 700 bones for hardware, is not really necessary anymore.
for example, sweetwater has a credit card where one can get 36 and sometimes 48 month financing with no interest... that's how i bought my interface, speaks, compressor and mic pre a few years back.
cause 700 bones won't buy much in good hardware these days, i say get something you've been dreaming about and pay it off over time.
no compromise.
just do it.
Appreciate it. See above about new roof, lol. Add that to I don't use credit, really. Getting away from credit for anything but a mortgage or a vehicle has saved my ass many times and allowed me to have enough savings for, like, a $20k roof. Womp womp.

was looking at getting a moog subsequent 25 a few days ago, being on sale atm and all... but i'm just not feelin it anymore.
thing is, i don't need anything... but sometimes i just wanna buy something. lol
i suppose, like an addictive drug... one needs to taper off slowly.
but for someone looking to get some good hardware for their home studio... i still say don't mess around... get what you really want... it'll make a positive difference in how one feels about the game in general.
Yes! I am such an idiot (SPOILER ALERT) - I ordered it this afternoon during a boring meeting. I am impulsive at times and boring meetings don't help. Thomann has it for around a 100 dollars cheaper than what I got it for at Sweetwater. And I KNEW that trick. I just wasn't thinking. Oh well. Poop. I can return it if it sucks or doesn't do everything I want sonically. I will keep the thread posted in case anyone else is thinking along these lines.
I guess the tariff thing was in the back of my mind at some point. I hate international politics. Actually I can shorten that and just say, I hate politics. April 2 is just around the corner, when our valiant leader saves us money and makes us great again by making everything more expensive. I don't get it, but I'm a simple man.
I apologize for posting a question and then not coming back. Today got busy at work, and it wasn't supposed to.
Thank you all for your input. Love you, fam.
