What bass extension setting are you using on your LYD 48?
When I first set mine up I kept everything at neutral on the 'wall' setting.
Unfortunately I do not have any other options for positioning other than where they are, which is very close to the wall behind them. In fact the positioning looks very similar to Somafunk's picture above, only my shelf is higher where the tweeters are more at ear level, also have my external monitor just like that, between the two speakers. I went with the ISO mini pucks (4 under each monitor) and they are unbelievably efficient, zero vibrations anywhere near the speakers!
It's a strange phenomenon, during the first few days, playing various tunes I know, I was completely blown away at the detail, the 'bigness' (especially coming from JBL 305), the depth, clarity, phantom center, etc.
They are just so impressive in every way possible but there was also a 'newness' factor which often eludes us. That so-called honeymoon period where just the fact that they are new and sound so different that the prior set, we tend to overreact with joy, totally normal human behavior.
Admittedly, my ears adjusted to them much quicker than I expected, so much so that no more than a few weeks later I found myself longing for that 'wow' factor, lol, does that make sense?
I was just mixing away one afternoon and everything just sounded so normal, nothing exciting, to the point where I caught myself thinking, 'hmm...do I still feel like these are a huge leap from when I mixed on the JBL 305s or am I just already so used to them now?".
I know it sounds weird, and I'm still madly in love with these, but as all my focus shifted towards actual work and mixing, that 'honeymoon' seemed to have waned quickly, but all things considered, maybe that's a good thing, meaning ok I can just move on now and get stuff done instead of just throwing on tunes I love and sit there with that ear-to-ear smile in admiration of how good things sound, y'know?
So one morning I thought hmmm...wonder if I could get a bit more low-end from these pups. So I reached behind and switched the bass extension from 0 to -10, and if I'm honest, at first I couldn't really pick up much difference but after a few days my brain somehow perceived that they may have sounded better on the 0 setting rather than -10?
Perhaps it's my room, which has some decent treatment.
I thought maybe allowing more bass to escape from the cabinet with them being so close to the wall was actually causing a bit more of a low-end mush I was picking up in some subtle way? In other words, sure, they were outputting more bass but it wasn't in the most pleasing way due to their positioning.
The other day I went ahead and switched it back to 0 and lo and behold, I was smiling again, the mids and highs were a delight, these monitors sound so good, though all of a sudden it felt like there was a slight lack of bass, aaaaargh....I know, I know....my brain was like "dude, which is it already, you wanted more bass, I gave you more bass at -10, but then you weren't sure you liked it, then you switch back to 0 and now you're like hey where's my low-end at!" sigh...my ears are playing tricks on me as of late, but I'll experiment a bit more and figure it out the sweet spot.
