dearVR - can you use this in the context of a regular mix? As in, in the headphones you can have certain instruments binaurally sit but on regular listening out side of headphones it still sounds fine? If so then this is something I would love to use subtly in a mix.

Ah this makes sense. Seems to be a bug or something on their mailing list. Can't complain about the customer service: ALWAYS a speedy reply and I remember they sorted me out before with a voucher on my first crossgrade when I just had a query so yeah they do look after you.

Depending on what you are doing, dearVR might be actually quite nice, esp. if you want to match the delay/reverb to what is going on in the picture.

Hmm tough one... Been waiting for Black Box and already have decapitator.. Used this in a mix and it did make a nice difference and had a different tone from decapitator. Plus it can do a lot more with the mid and sides and the crossovers than decapitator or black box...can so its an option that is nice to have as it is a lot more flexible.. Is it needed hmmm.. man slutz says yeah course.. Mr sensible says not really needed but would be nice to have.. hmm..

I have a 25 dollar off voucher still to use and if I knew black box was coming this month I would use it on that but as we have no idea what BX will do next, might just blow the voucher on this and get it for 4dollars. it is a steal at that price.. argghh :/

I loved the XL saturation in bx_limiter even though I hated the limiter itself. Around 20% on just about any source always works great to enhance it adding forwardness, excitement and punch without obviously sounding distorted/dirty.

Doesn't every DAW nowadays have a simple way to insert any plugin in M/S?
I know Logic X has one, and they are usually late to the game.

Black Box HG-2 was a 'Star for one day' on the 5th of February. The chance of it being in the same sale again this month, with so many plugins yet to be featured, seems very very slim to me.

Might be wrong about black box having a mid side matrix but know for sure decapitator doesn't and thats what makes this so easy to use and get quick results too.. The only thing it doesn't have is a mix control so I needed to use an AUX to blend it in but as Bouroki mentions, it adds a nice sheen to most things..

In Logic X you can insert any plugin in dual mono (on a stereo track) you can then decide whether you use the dual mono channels as L-R or M/S.
Other DAWs should be able to do something similar I'd guess.
The only real downside to Logic's implementation is that it doesn't seem to have an ability to solo the separate channels, so you'll have to use a separate plugin for that.

Ableton Live can't do that but there are free plugins which can. Voxengo MSED and Goodhertz Midside Matrix are the ones I know of. Haven't started exploring them yet but from the looks of it either should do what you need.

Is it easier with dedicated M/S support in a plugin? Sure. The limitation of that is that if you want to use a different plugin for a different sound you can't.

Last things first - thanks for that bit of info as that simplifies my strategy on plugin buying for this month.

As to your first statement - I don't quite understand what you're getting at? Do you mean that Logic has a built-in M/S matrix? If so then I know of at least two daws that don't. One is ProTools and the other is Digital Performer. Don't know about Cubase. I know PT can do dual mono plugin inserts but not DP. I know PA has a plugin (bx_control V2) that will do the matrix thing for you; you need one at the beginning of the insert chain and another at the end if you want to do M/S with a plugin that doesn't do it natively.

Back to the plugin at hand - when I demoed bx_Saturator I also demoed bx_XL V2 and for me the result was the same - it was very easy to ruin a mix pretty quickly if care wasn't taken.

Logic indeed has a built in M/S matrix that will let you use any plugin in M/S mode.
You can choose to insert a plugin on a stereo track either as a stereo plugin (which would be the normal operating mode) or as dual mono.
The latter will allow you to either:
- Use a plugin in dual mono mode
- Use a plugin in M/S mode
The upside is you don't need any additional plugins for the encoding and decoding (as you otherwise indeed need 2 extra plugins).
The downside is that it lacks (as far as I can tell) a way to solo M or S.

I really thought other DAWs would be doing that as well, as, to my knowledge, Logic is rarely the first to implement something.

I picked up the NUGEN SigMod which can do all kinds of crazy tricks with signal routing, M/S , vst hosting , etc.

How about those on/off buttons below M and S?

They just switch off the plugin for that channel (hard bypass), sadly.


ps: I just tried shift-clicking, command-clicking, option-clicking, command-shift-option-12345-qwerty-clicking... no solo (or mute).

I don't personally find bx_saturator to be something I need. Sure the multi-band M/S thing was cool when it came out but now I already know I wouldn't use it much because of its lack of saturation options. It has one option and it's a decent option but this plugin only really makes sense if you really like its sound and plan to take full advantage of its multi-band M/S capabilities. I rarely use saturation in these configurations these days so I would be buying a plugin with a whole bunch of buttons and sliders just to use two knobs. The XL knob in bx_limiter gets me close enough to be satisfied.

That's a little known feature that I like. The bx_limiter is what I use when I don't need the cleanliness of Fabfilter Pro L and is infinitely easier to get a good sound out of than Wave L3 series.

It used to be my go to limiter for track level stuff. I have the XL knob at 25% by default. Then PSP released Twin-L and I haven't used the bx_limiter since. It's also great to throw on the master bus as a safety net until you are ready to do actual limiting work. I highly recommend giving Twin-L a try if you don't mind ilok. Easily one of my favorite dynamics processors.

Sounds like an endorsement for Twin-L. I've been a fan of PSP s/w since my early Sonar days when Vintage Warmer (the original) was my first third party compressor. Have a few more of their plugs - the L'otary is my go-to Leslie emulation and I still break out Vintage Warmer 2 on synth tracks that need to have some of the edge taken off of.

Got no problem with iLok; PT needs it as does several of my other plugins. I much prefer it to watermarked s/w or challenge/response or keyfile. The absolute worst protection scheme I've ever seen is what Vengeance uses for Avenger. It's a keyfile scheme that also needs to see one's computer not only for initial install but any time you buy an expansion pack for it. PITA big time.
