According to the review in SOS the valve in the Sonos is run at over 200V which is within spec for that kind of valve.
Im aware of the usage of 12ax7 tubes in guitar preamp stages, I've changed many lol. 200v is definitely not in "starved plate" territory (which is usually more like 40v), so it probably sounds decent and not just that "farty" "weak" distortion to blend in to "taste". My bad for assuming lol.
I'm sure the unit sounds decent and is probably an upgrade vs some other interfaces (even if bypassing most of the guitar centric stuff on board), but I doubt it'd be much improvement vs Motu M4, especially if you use external preamps and make use of the slightly more options for analog I/O. Just my opinion.
