Funny how some "PA brands" msrp are A LOT lower at PB.

I wonder if now that some of those developers are free of PA will they put out the fixes PA sat on? Will they do something like being able to save presets from within the plugin and NOT have to use one's daw preset save system? You know - like most every other developer does?

Well now... my mixes from 10 years ago would indicate otherwise. I have taken the wind out of the sails of many a good tune in my day.

I’m curious as to whether getting this would mean I’d no longer want my preamps, as Audient theoretically has great ones and I’d have the option of the tube for color. I have an ISAOne and Golden Age Pre73 (upgraded with Jensen transformer). My current mics are an SM7b and a Lewitt LCT40 Pure LDC. Would it be as clean and clear as the Focusrite and have enough power to get a decent signal off the SM7 without a cloud lifte.

The Oven is ok. Sound is decent, controls take a minute to get used to. All-in-all it's not hugely different from any other digi-tube emulation IMO. I thought the Looptrotter Sa2rate² had a much more interesting sound and I picked that up in December for $25. Still not sorry I passed on The Oven lol.

You'll probably not want to ditch your preamps. The Audient ones are good for built in pres, very clean, low noise. But I have a hard time believing they'd outshine your ISA, and they certainly won't give you any character like your GAP73. Depending on what you're upgrading from, the Audient stuff will probably give you better sounding conversion (both A/D and D/A), and probably a better headphone amp. I find the DAC on the Audient stuff to sound a bit "metallic" in the high end, can be fatiguing after long sessions if you're sensitive to that kind of thing, but they do sound good.

I’m coming from a MOTU M4 and I’m perfectly happy with it aside from the lack of a second headphone output (which the Sono doesn’t have either).

I do have an old ProFire 2626 that I’m trying to sell, but the Sono would probably make me keep it to use with tye ADAT input. Not that I ever record more than one instrument at a time in my home studio. But never say never.

Ah. Well I already have Sa2urate 2, so I guess I’ll skip The Oven.

Keep the M4 IMO. The Sono won't bring anything to the table if you're not gonna use it for guitar recording IMO. AFAIK the 12ax7 tube is a starved plate design (how could it be anything else with the power consumption of this unit?), so more gimmick than anything really.

The 12AX7 tube is used in lots of guitar pre-amp stages and has been for decades. You’ll find them in Marshall and Fender amps to name but two.

According to the review in SOS the valve in the Sonos is run at over 200V which is within spec for that kind of valve.

anything good that i can get my hands on really... but the two things that helped me the most is being open and constantly playing around with my mixes and with mixes of songs from artists i like... and a few threads i found here on GS... one in particular where a bunch of ME's talked about the industry and their journey in it, their relationship with clients, mix engineers and record companies... there were a few having trouble with the ethics around charging their fee when all they needed to do was a bit of limiting, so they would sometimes do stuff that wasn't needed which usually created problems... the others were like, just suck it up and do your job, it's all part of the gig... there was talk about how some mixers send their mixes already half mastered to maintain more control over the outcome and how the ME's dealt with it... interesting stuff... my take away was that since i play all roles in my music, i could essentially set up certain relationships with these rolls and make it fairly consistent and somewhat of an easy journey... a work in progress, but as far as mastering, it helped me relax and know that i can do as much or as little as needed to a mix with not much effort and... it's not that big of a deal.

Im aware of the usage of 12ax7 tubes in guitar preamp stages, I've changed many lol. 200v is definitely not in "starved plate" territory (which is usually more like 40v), so it probably sounds decent and not just that "farty" "weak" distortion to blend in to "taste". My bad for assuming lol.

I'm sure the unit sounds decent and is probably an upgrade vs some other interfaces (even if bypassing most of the guitar centric stuff on board), but I doubt it'd be much improvement vs Motu M4, especially if you use external preamps and make use of the slightly more options for analog I/O. Just my opinion.

I’m not suggesting anybody should replace anything with a Sono — the only person I’m selling a sono to is me :-)

I wasn't sure about this (nor Sa2rate) due to already having both the HG-2Ms and VSM-3 along with a few others. Watched Maor's walk-through video on how he uses it and demoed it afterwards, then got it yesterday. I personally think it offers something different and would recommend at least watching that video and demoing it if you can. Of course YMMV

One thing I wasn't sure about with the Sono was if the amp out was available without the DAW running. Couldn't find the answer so I stopped considering it since if I'm going to have it hooked up, I want to be able to play through my amp too. I thought the block diagram only had the amp out from the DAC. Something maybe to think about if that's a scenario. I could have been over thinking things.

Thank you. Used this to buy The Oven. After listening to some of the demos, I think it sounded particularly good on guitar and piano and did add some unique mojo that didn't sound too "distorted" as some saturation plugins tend to do. They didn't have great vocal demos, but I'll give it a try.
