I'd like to try this as a HF Limiter, as the Ratio option is the perfect candidate, along with the FDR High Shelf.

Perfect! I've never done that before but I certainly will now.

Kotelnikov tries to get the job done traditionally, without "cheating". No lookahead.
I never liked the sound of lookahead control very much.
FYI, lookahead is a bit more than just a delay, it also asks for a specialized smoothing approach that makes sure the lookahead doesn't attack too soon, and in particular, doesn't release too early either.

Have you tried Nova GE instead? I has lookahead and very detailed control, including upward compression, a SC band different from the controlled band, and whatever.

Limiter 6 GE's HF limiter's "REL mode" also makes a nice alternative choice vs classic de-essers.

FYI, we're working a fat version of Kotelnikov which will likely satisfy more of your demands, and possibly more. But this is no option for short or mid term, there's still a lot of work to do.

I have a nearly finished pre-master, so I needed HF limiter to tuck in the transients right before clipping & limiting.

I ended up with Lim6 in mid side mode, 2% dry, Insane processing, absolute threshold. That is about as transparent as I could get.

I actually set all of my channels using NOVA then I'll try the same setting on other plugins, because NOVA is like the greatest Swiss army knife plugin ever.

I tried the acceleration limiter on Simulathe.

And I REALLY wanted Kotelnikov to work in this instance. The sound quality is unbeatable.

Please consider including some MS variable linkage in the diesel version of Kotelnkov if and when it comes out.

I don't think anyone here is in a rush for updates though.... the current state of these plugs are already indispensable.

Sorry for offtopic, but would love to know about Nova GE, is it possible/planned to add LIVE processing like in other plugins?
I had to go Toneboosters EQ4 for many EQ tasks that Nova did for that reason, since I like to record additional stuff when arleady started mixing.

I still have to find a compressor that does extreme fast attack times better than Kotelnikov / Molot.

Never felt the need to have a lookahead option when using them.

Yes, an all products update follows very soon. We're going through open change requests first, but it won't take long.

Product releases depend on our progress.

For example we're also working on improving our magnitude displays with deeper GPU support (now that we've learned so much about GFX cards in context of SimuLathe). If this sees good progress, we might even release a larger Nova update before all others. No idea yet, it's several projects evolving in parallel.

Sum/Diff for Nova or a Nova successor is possible. But maybe more in the way SlickEq M presents it, with each band having its own explicit width and balance controls. This would have the advantage to "demotivate" the user from doing dynamic EQing on Sum or Diff separately (sort of a minefield). It also helps us correct problematic/contradicting timing issues appearing in raw L/R or M/S EQing setups, in the same way SlickEQ M does.

Seems like a good time to pick up Nova GE then

IMO the 0.9 option isn’t delicate enough so I have to bring in other…. essential… plug-ins if I need to wake up the signal or the transients
But you are right. Slick eq is already the one stop shop. Add some dynamics and it’s the cherry on top

Bear in mind that SlickEQ M's LF and HF exciter are specialized dynamics processors. They are dynamic shelves in a crazy distortion shielded setup. They use momentary dynamics (like clippers) to generate smooth upward compression, do complex phase rotation/smearing as a side effect and produce far less non harmonic distortion than normally possible physically. Definitely worth exploring in detail, especially on already complex material. Can do really cool things with boring basskicks, too.

I didn't know nor could I always hear that the exciters were shelves. They sound much more targeted like a bell.
Don't get me wrong; I still use them alot. It works pretty much flawlessly for achieving that 10k energy.
MAYBE allow use to adjust the slope of the shelf? I can safely guess its not a 6db slope.
Honestly its not that big of a concern.
I said before I would love a vari-mu transfer curve. There are a lot of new Vari plugs coming out, and IMO they just don't level a signal properly. Most of them sound jumpy, and I just don't need to add movement that often. Some mixes are great and just need tasteful leveling... like the HOLD function sometimes does. I'm not hearing that so far.
The pre-existing GR limit feature and Peak crest feature would pair wonderfully with a "tube" transfer curve and a hold function.

Wow I didn't know the LF and HF exciters were so complex! But it's TDR, I shouldn't be surprised at the sheer depth of thought that has gone into every masterful detail in Slick EQ-M.

i always found the low Slick Eq M exiter band doing something nice.
But what I really use more often is the low band pass on Slick EQ GE on masters.
It makes prominent bass sounds to feel like they come from the back, having the low end to not overcome the vocals even when being quite prominent.
It even helps evening an asymmetric track that pushed only on the positive end on the limiter.
I dig that deep low end depth feeling that generates. It's quite unique.

TDR always have that unique features that I always reach for, as they sound unique and have not substitutes.

I've discovered in the last year or so how handy Slick EQ M's high and low exciters can be in mastering: just occasionally they get in places conventional EQ either can't address or doesn't work as well.

Once I grasped that, as with the HEDD processes, a little goes a long way, the exciters have become what I would describe as a useful secondary resource.

They are specifically made for mastering. The busier the signal already is, the less they do.

I've always found classic exciters to focus too much on the highest levels, and saturate too far outside of their indicated range. They also tend to paint over the material with a thick brush, which usually finds no reasonable use in mastering.

But excitation (i.e. subtle saturation, dynamics processing, phase shift) offers an important service aside traditional EQing, especially in "produca restoration" or when trying to fix boring mixes.

Hence, SlickEQ's exciters take an upward compression approach, and use strong distortion shielding to offer precise musical control over the generated harmonics, while reducing IMD to irrelevant levels (= very little non harmonic distortion).

Sadly, none yet about this feature specifically. Was added very late (replacing the initial, rather boring band saturation).

You really don’t need any tutorial : put Exciter to 130-150%, target the frequency range you want to « excite », than adjust % to taste. Easy !
