Any EQ that claims linear phase and isn't makes me highly suspicious of it upfront. EDIT: seems I was wrong about that, sorry.

But the eq that fader8 is testing is not the one they claim to be linear phase is it?. That one is supposedly an improved version of the original T-Racks eq...

According to the preference setting screen dump it is supposed to be linear phase yes. But it isn't AFAIK. EDIT: seems I was wrong about that, sorry.

I believe it's only the linear phase eq that is...eeh linear. This dude is trying out the old eq that is also part of t-racks 3, if I understand things correctly.

Thanks for clearing that up. I'll update that page when I get a chance. I received T-Racks as a promotional and it only included this EQ. I wasn't aware that there was a separate "linear phase" version. I'd be curious to see if that one has the same oddball filter response when in oversampling mode, though.

I am very interested in these plugins. Has anyone spent any time with them in mastering?

I have tested them out, and they sound very nice indeed. Wouldn't complain about the quality at all.

I would give the opto compressor a try, it can bring the snap out of a tune like any other software compressor i encountered.

Downloaded the demo last night and so far so good. I really like the opto compressor very much. I haven't messed with the brickwall yet.

I also found the phase linear eq to be very nice and usable. The Pultec is also nice for adding some sheen on top and girth on the bottom.

Processor hit is minimal which is very nice on my native system, also the delay introduced is very short.

Will update later, I'm right in the middle of two album projects and I plan to use the plugins quit a bit during the 10 day demo.

So far, really like the linear phase eq. It 's the first eq that's worked for me on
the whole mix.

I love the T-racks Pultec emulation. I have absolutely no interest in how faithful (or not) it is to the hardware unit, it sounds fantastic. The low end has a satisfying "oily" quality.

i think this should be the point - it doesn't need to be accurate, it just needs to sound amazing - i think the best we can really get nowawdays is that the plugin is inspired by a hardware unit especially since most hardware boxes still sound a bit different

No two really sound the same.

The T-Racks Fairchild is great I think. As said in some other thread, I believe the T-Racks emulation is the only one who also models the input drive. Cranking the input on the TR FC can really give you some very nice 'thickness', even without using compression.

try SPL FREE Ranger - on 40hz - sounds coooooooool .. a lot of oil + glue

Except the SPL free ranger is a bog standard EQ with nothing added. It's just an extremely wide and gentle shelf. That's all..

The T-racks plugins actually model some "mojo", or technically speaking harmonic distortion, cross talk, noise and in general all the small details and weird behaviour of analogue equipment (they even modelled the slight difference in levels and compression behaviour of the left and right channels).

but i tried the cichy advice and it made for a lot more mojo than the IK pultec in the same purpose (mastering).
actually i gave a try to the ik plugs for the demo period and found myself always put them off at last and found other options working better, except for the opto comp wich i did not like as much on single tracks than whole mix.

Usually, "mojo" is the "extra fluff" that is added in a process and since the SPL doesn't add anything extra, there is no mojo. You are of course entitled to your opinion and way of wording things.. just letting you know my position to clarify my original post.

Yeah i've seen that post twice now. Thats t-racks paranoia for ya. It makes me smile when people start slating the shit out of this version, its actually excellent. If you a/b between these and the UAD versions, regardless of how faithful the emualtions are, the t-racks processors are more sonically pleasing and DEFINITELY add more density, but not in an ott way. I'm an avid user and lover of hardware BUT i still love the sound of this program!

I did the 10 day demo with the t-racks 3 bundle and decided that I couldn't live without it. There is a wonderful quality that the opto compressor brings to the 2mix buss that I have come to love. I also enjoy the meaty feel of the fairchild 660 and the sheen/girth of the EQP-1A.

I believe that anyone could benefit in some way from this plugin bundle and it's pretty darn reasonable if you are cross-grading as I did for $299.

does the SPL do not add nothing extra because they didn't said so in their sales pitch unlike IK, or did you get an actual comparison by ear between the Ik pultec and the free ranger, if not i highly encourage you to do so.
i know that the free ranger is a passive eq and thus by design is not intended to add some harmonic distortion or mojo or like you said anybody's way of wording things.
But imagine a second that some mojo could come from hey, a passive eq !!!!
i agree with you it's all very subjective and personal, i was just not enjoying the way the ik pultec was sounding than i jumped on an other poster suggestion and found in the free ranger what i was looking for in the Pultec... and spreading the word in relay after trying it by myself.


the spl is a bell curve type and is not wide at all on the 40hz,in fact the Q is different at every frequency the wider being the 1,8khz very wide actually.

I actually tried the free ranger on your suggestion, and yes it is a very nice eq. A very different beast to the eqp though. I found the SPL to sound excellent on kicks and electric guitar and the 16k bell can sound great on vox. I would prefer the eqp as a program equalizer about 99.9% of the time though as it is a little more sympathetic and versatile. The output stage is very lovely & rich too. I can't believe im actually describing software, how times have changed.

yes the eqp has a nice output on channels even thought if you retire the 1.5db it adds to the signal just by inserting it. But when you give him some already loud mixed material i found the spl handled the frequency boosts much better, maybe just because it don't add those db at first.
But again yes the eqp sound is very desirable at mix time. And i will give it a second chance on program material.

Analog modeled linear-phase eq is an oxymoron.

In my opinion these are brilliant plugins. I compared them to various Waves plugins, including SSL, and the sound quality is consistently as good or better. The Fairchild is very useful, the classic EQ sounds lovely and smooth and the pultec is great for adding some shine to the mix. The opto compressor is also one of the best plugin mix bus compressors I've ever used.
