I’ve been using an Adam Sub 7 with my One15s on and off over the years. I have it set up at the moment to just add a tiny bit of bottom end.

That said, I trust my Slate VSX headphones for mixing bass much more than on a sub.

Try looking into Rythmik Audio. I had started a conversation about getting a pair of subs for the Two 15's when I was in my bigger space and they were very helpful.

Plus 1 on the Rythmik. Have one paired with the One18’s and it’s very helpful. A very fast subwoofer.

I have the LV12R, which is one of their “bargain basement” offerings but damn if it isn’t perfect for my needs.

I just built a pair of subs using the plans on the Seas site, looks to be the same driver in the flexbase system.

Super pleased with the results. I have a Trinnov to handle the crossover and time alignment, but even using the bass management in my Crookwood they sound awesome, super tight and punchy, very well integrated. I would have absolutely loved the Base25 system but am very pleased with this setup. Can 100% recommend. Total costs around 1200 GBP, including a Behringer A800 for amplification. May try building an amp with the ICEPower amp module amphion uses at some point to see if its a noticeable improvement.

Does anyone know if Amphions can be serviced in the US, or do you need to ship them back to Finland?

That´s great! do you have any pictures? did you buy the driver and passive one?

They are not much to look at as I didn't paint them, so just a plain MDF cube basically.

I made them just like the plans, with one driver and one passive radiator in each box.

I am running dual SVS SB-1000s with my one15s, through a hardware crossover and tweaked using software-mode Dirac (just as two channel). Endless tweaking and a lot of membrane and broadband treatment but I have solid response down to 20Hz.

The SB-1000s introduce a tiny, almost inaudible amount of noise (it shows up on graphs and you can hear it if you get your head right next to it) and have a lot of distortion around 30Hz but are otherwise very good. I believe the newer SB-1000 Pro fixed this.

I find one15s in my room have a weird sharp edge somewhere in the top end, I much prefer the sound with a little bit of DSP correction but I'm very happy with the setup at the moment.

Overall I'm sure the Amphions are better, probably a super well made cabinet, dual opposed drivers so less unwanted vibration and twice the power handling.

The flexbase didn't appeal to me personally, and the base25 is too much money for me to spend at the moment. In any case, I'm very happy with my DIY solution!

I am searching for a nice alternative to the Amphions sub-woofers, which are expensive, and something produced in Europe. (you know about those crazy taxes for products outside the European Union)

I purchased the newer Dynaudio Powered Sub i believe its called the 9S to pair with my One18's just to fill in the bottom octave a little. I set the crossover by ear and just blended it up underneath. Its a new design, no ports so bass is very tight and deep. Incredible how much it lets me hear EQ moves below 100Hz which I am afraid the One18s did not. Sounds incredible blended together.

How far away from the front wall do the two18 and two15 need to be? My speaker position seems to be ideal closest to the wall. Thanks

I don't think anyone can answer this question. We can only say further is better in general. You may want to try some kind of absorbent material behind the speakers. It works as a low pass filter for the sound from the passive radiator, and it may improve lower frequency congestion a little.

Got it. It seems obvious that the passive radiators might need some room but I thought maybe I could get lucky and put them right up against the wall.

I like the form factor of the Amphions but if have to have it away from the walls, it defeats the advantage of only being a foot deep, if that makes sense

Passive radiators only need about 2 inches.

"further the better" is not true. Further from the wall means shifting the low end dip into the more obvious frequency area (rear bounce nulling with front radiation of lower frequencies.) Very close is very good. And then the next step is very far (we're talking meters from a boundary.) But those in-between distances will only create massive nulls in the 90Hz to 150Hz range.

Yup, that was a misconception I was under not too long ago. Hours and hours of testing by listening to music turned out to be bad for me because I’m a bass head and anything I would go for would have a huge bump at 40 hz when I would follow up with REW. -even though I was listening for accuracy and balance and not a pleasing sound.

REW shows most balanced in the frequency response when my speakers are up against the wall and my listening position is in the center of the room - not 38%

I would also like to know where or how you got the information in only a 2 inch clearance. As I understand, on a rear ported speaker, you only need 2 inches in some cases. I haven’t been able to find any documentation on the amphions specifically.

I once asked Anssi about my One18 position, 3cm to the wall. He said "Nothing to worry. This is one good reminder that the only rule is what works". He also said he hates the ringing mush of bass and wants clear impact from the first notes, and that's why he chose radiators.
The way our room bounces bass has to be measured.

Genelec also advised to stick speakers on a wall when nothing else works, in a couple of their user manuals. but what kind of wall ?

When people write "back wall" it could be about a thin bamboo wall between the next room, or my 65cm stone wall.
And they might have the same room dimension but concrete ceiling wall with thin plaster walls, I have it the other way round: thick walls and thin porting structures.

I'm just glad Amphion radiators "risk" nothing up against a wall, other than that, in my view, acoustics are way too specific to advise anything on a forum. Anything weird can work including sticking speakers on a wall ! good luck

Thanks! I’ve wanted to go the ATC route because I heard them in person and loved their sonic picture when compared to all other speakers. They are just so.. physically massive. So I’m considering other options.

I know a lot of metal producers go with amphions. Jens Borgen, Will Putney, Christian kole to name a few. I know that monitors shouldn’t be looked at as being genre specific, but it’s hard not to ignore all those guys using them and still using them to this day.


It’s also hard not to ignore the video below but I’m trying to. He makes these speakers seem like they have mushy lows

I have loved ATC, but Amphion just are spot on to me.
It's reaaaally easy to me to ignore the youtube reviews ahah, and Anssi specifically told me they went passive radiator to prevent bass mush which he hates.
The guy in the video points out he doesn't know if it's the radiator or the room that is "loose", well I might have an idea!

I have never heard Two18. I much favored One15 over One18, tighter and faster. They really need attention to be placed, then they come alive.

What matters is your ears, your room, what comes out of it. Best is to work on them and another pair and review your work outside of the studio: by the quality of it AND time it took to get there on said monitor. cheers

No need to “get” the information. Passive radiators are just different function of ported designs (they solve a problem of ports but introduce another). Speaker design is always a trade-off. As long as there is enough room for excursion, a radiator works as it’s expected. Even downfiring subwoofers only need a little more than their xmax. A passive radiator (having no motor) needs less than that.

This definitely puts them on the map for me. I’m going make them slap! (the wall)
