I’m interested in getting a set of Amphions as a nearfield for this room for when I work on music at home. I’ve never tried them, but they seem interesting, and I’d like to try them. I’ve never owned a passive monitor, so I would most likely get the amp 700 with the One15 or One18. I’d be mainly using them for mixing, but how are they for tracking? There will be situations where I can see myself using them while recording. How do they fare in that situation? Specifically, how well do they handle drums? Acoustic guitars and banjos? They seem a bit delicate for a drum set…..like I will end up damaging them regularly and constantly replacing woofers….but I’ve never tried them, so this is all speculation. Still, I am attracted to the idea of being able to repair my own speakers. What’s the reality of these speakers? Can they admirably handle a tracking environment?
Also, regarding playback, are they like a nice set of hifi speakers and easy to listen to? Or are they nasty like NS10’s?
I’d like to test those as well as the ATC SCM20ASL as my main options for this room. I’m familiar with the ATC family sound, having now used SCM100’s extensively at a commercial studio.
As far as i can tell the Ones are nearfields and the Twos are midfields.
They are very dynamic and can handle fast drum and percussive transients with ease... But you cannot drive the Ones too loud in tracking or mixing.
Also Amphions while pretty musical sounding are rather neutral in sound so for tracking they are not sparking inspiration.
I had the same beef.
Was mixing and tracking with MSP7 but with punchy drums ripped my woofer cone.
So went for Two18s as to hear a bit lower and have plenty of volume if needed. Cos the Flexbase sub is insanely expensive.
You usually raise volume during tracking to get into the vibe of the song. A whole different mindset than mixing. For mixing its better at moderate volume to make the best mixing decisions.
So best is either two sets of monitors for tracking and mixing , or a set with more power to handle louder volumes.
The Two have double the drivers for that.
That said they are nowhere near as nasty as in distortion as the original NS10s but they sure sound upfront in the mids and voiced differently than ATC.
I would stay with the sound you know and love being ATC but you can always add a secondary set of One15s later.
