I have been searching everywhere, but I have no clue on the recording console used on the BBC live concerts of the very early 70s concerts.
I love cats stevens, james taylor and neil you g sound of the era.
I bought AKG C28 from the concerts, but have no clue on the console.
Would love any info.

I’ve been curious about that myself. Those concerts sound fantastic.

I'd have thought that the console would not really add much to the sound, it's the performance that makes it great not the gear, if I had the same U87 as bowie I'd never even come close to sounding like him.

I disagree. I think without a great console, those artists would have sounded like Bob Dobb at the Wednesday night laundromat hootenanny. Trust me, that’s not good.

The question was, “What gear might have helped Bowie or Stevens sound especially good in these particular recordings?”
If you don’t understand the question or why it is a perfectly good question in this particular forum, perhaps you should re-start in the newbie forum.

Weren't shows recorded at various venues using the two bbc mobile trucks?

I see console etc info for the trucks going back to about 1978, but nothing for circa 1970-ish. Looks like bbc was constantly upgrading.

The BBC used highly modified PYE mixers (CMCR) (modified for needs of the BBC by the engineers of the BBC) from the sixties through the early 70's (CMCR13).

The first Neve console the BBC purchased was in the mid 70's (Rupert didn't want to sell mixers to the BBC because of the modifications they wanted made it unprofitable).

A "frankenstein" Pye mixer pretty much made it a "BBC Console" after all the changes.
