1. People are praising ATCs so they can get rid of theirs and buy something different
2. People are disappointed by ATC because they expect magic for the price but there is no magic: treated room is needed, learning curve is there anyway
3. Do they translate?
lol

No monitor will translate 100% across it's users because it's always going to be dependent on the room and placement. People also have different taste in listening. There's a learning curve for sure on ATC's but once you really understand them they translate fantastic. I'm not too sure about your theories, it sounds like you're overthinking it. Go on reverb and look at the used market for ATC's. Every few weeks a pair will pop up and go quickly. But you rarely see them for sale used often. So the whole people are praising to get rid of there's doesn't really fit.
I promise I'm not an ATC groupie, I love a lot of different monitors and love to give recommendations based on my experience in all price ranges. It's just ATC gets the same amount of hate as it does praise, I find it a bit ironic. Could be the price of course, but the build quality alone on ATC is better than a lot of it's direct competition and I rarely see people mention that.
