I’d reach out to them directly. They seem like the kind of company that is eager to find out if anything’s wrong with their products, and from what I’ve heard, willing to help their clients out directly. I also think they don’t want people here/online getting the impression they have bad QC.

Do you use AES connection and on older firmware?
mine acted like this a year ago and I had a video Zoom call with Genelec a couple of times, It turns out it's a bug in the firmware that keeps falling back to Analog in whenever the 8351B powers on. They released a new firmware that fixed this issue a month after my report and mine working fine ever since.

No all analog connection. What is strange is that even when I try to do a test tone, no sound at all. Also a weird whirring buzz coming from it. It seems as dead as a brick. I live in Australia and hopefully some parts will arrive soon. Fairly frustrating and scary as prob blown DSP I'm told. I hope no vulnerability in design. I hope Genelec have good customer service. They have a great name in this regard. I also have a wonderful rep in Australia which is partly why I felt confident in purchasing. I'm hoping all will be sorted and I'll be able to reply with a positive tale.

That's my guess from what you've described. I've had 4 or 5 different Genelec monitors/subs repaired due to blown DSP boards. None were the One design though -- all were from the previous generation -- so, yes, hopefully they've fixed this tendency to fail with this generation.

I might pull the trigger on a pair of 8351B’s. But me with a bit old-fashioned mindset, can’t get over the Class D amps and the ADC/DAC that goes on inside. (The 4ms latency I don’t mind.) Can someone please bring me up to speed and sell me on these? Also, can’t help but think in 6-7 years, these might be obsolete? Not dissing, just can’t wrap my head around it.

I'm one to read deep into the specs and can easily be turned off by something that bugs me. Multiple conversions, amp classification, etc. I get it. But the proof is in the pudding. I think you'll hear what I heard from the very beginning: the converters and amps are absolutely NOT getting in the way. The overall package is extremely well designed, implemented and built. You won't think about what's inside or out once you get a proper GLM profile established and listen to your first reference album.

They're a considerable upgrade from the 8040s.

I don't know exactly but would guess a few hundred bucks.

I had both boards fail on my 8351As within a few weeks of each other recently. Including shipping across the US, out of warranty repair was about $400 a pop.

Edit: Correction - About $530 a pop.

~$400 is about what I remember. That was for a previous generation of Genelec monitor, not as complex as the 83xx series, but it sounds like those main boards are about the same $$.

It's bizarre that both of yours went out at nearly the same time. I'm still hoping that the Ones are less susceptible to this electrical issue as previous gens and that your case is uncommon. I'd very much like to never again send another monitor back to Massachusetts.

Check again: It was $530, not $400. My hunch was that they just have a shelf life to them, but heat is the enemy, and the As use a traditional class AB amp (I believe) for the tweeter, generating more heat than the newer Bs.

I remember closer to $400, but again this was NOT for the newer 53xx series, which, I suspect, uses a different board than what I sent them.

Or do we think the DSP is the same for both? I can't imagine they even could be given their differences.

Regardless of the nitpicking over invoices, it's a sizable repair bill that no one wants to pay.

Yes

The 8351s have an AES digital input if you want to avoid DA/AD/DA.

That said, I’ve not noticed any perceivable difference between analog or digital inputs and you should try the Ones.

At first 8351s might not seem that impressive compared to 8040s, but in use for mixing their strengths will soon become apparent. My mixes became easier and faster using the 8351s. No question.

Crazy good, uncanny and extremely solid stereo image with a huge sweet spot. I can bend down to my side rack and still hear a very decent presentation. Where other speakers fall apart.

The 8351s for their size are also very impressive, have low, refined bass and are louder than you might think.

I very much doubt they will become obsolete and you will be able to carry on using them for many years.

Since my last post, it’s been a small journey. Had the 8351’s in here for a week, learned a bit about them, enjoyed them. Long story short, I sent them back and went up to the 8361A! Working them has already been great. I’m still using Analog IN for now, but I did do the GLM calibration. All is well here indeed.

How do the 8361s compare to the 8351s?

At this point, I’ve now spent more time with the 8361A’s than my 1 week with 8351B’s. But from what I remember:

Before GLM Calibration, 8351 was a hair more shouty in the mids when listening to commercial mastered stuff. But the bass was still ok, very listenable. Up to that point I had not ever experienced GLM yet.

And when the 8361A’s arrived, before I did GLM, the bass was heftier than the 8351B. I felt like I really needed the calibration, which cleans up the bass for me in my room.

For its size the 8351B really punched above its weight. At lower volumes, they’re both pretty similar actually. But I already have the right stands, and my room is big enough, and I’m already paying for them, so I had to jump up to 8361A. These guys really give me that huge width, great detail… ahhh, it’s so much fun to listen to stuff again. And most importantly, work has been easier. That level of trust is building up fast.

I completely get you when you say that trust builds up very quickly. I had the same experience with the 8351Bs, it took only a few days to become very comfortable with, and more comfortable than the speakers I had for years.

It does surprise me how loud and deep the 8351Bs go, they are half the size of my previous speaker and are louder and have a hair more low end. So I can only imagine what the 8361As are like

Yes, to me it does feel that way. And this is taking account of all DIP switches, and GLM Calibration for both models. But of course I can only speak of my room.

On the marketing graphs and measurements etc. the 8361A looks like it's only a hair different than 8351B, but hearing it in-person, it's definitely a beefier animal.

I find that the 8361s have a more relaxed presentation than 8351s.

adding a sub to the system opens the 8351s up.

I added a 7370 to my 8351As. Sounds better and gets louder

I like that combination very much and many listeners did too.

I have been working on a pair of NF-3s for a couple of years now and they are amazing for their punch!

I had some ATCs previous to the Strauss and I remember the ATCs being easier to EQ with, but the punch is what makes the Strauss so easy to work with. Dynamic processing and distortion are significantly more obvious with the Strauss.

The midrange is good, but nothing to die for.

Has anyone here compared 8351’s with Barefoot Footprint 01’s or the Hedd Type 20?

I’m mostly curious about low end extension and impact. Both the Footprint and Hedd have incredible low end performance for their size, with the Footprint excelling in output and the Hedd in accuracy (at least in my room). Is the 8351 equally impressive in the low end or does it need a subwoofer?

I may add a sub down the line, and the ability to integrate it seamlessly with GLM is one reason I’m considering a Genelec. But I’d be less enthusiastic about an initial purchase if the speakers alone can’t compete in the low end with much less expensive Footprints or Hedds.

I tested the 8351b and FP01 and the gene is better, but pricier too.

I’m at the ATC, Strauss, genelec junction - I aleady have 0310 and sub so a second pair unless I manage to sell my 0310’s. Strauss a good replacement for the ATC’s?

I heard 8331/8341/8351 in a Genelec showroom.

8331 sounded strained at higher volumes, limiter kicked un way too quickly. 8341 could go louder, sounded much more open, and got loud with no strain. 8351 presented too much to me, was almost too expansive. In the end i much preferred the focus pf the 8341, in that specific room.
