I also added the IK T-Racks Bus Comp. That was far more complicated and annoying (had to update my Custom Shop via the new Product manager, reboot the system etc.), but anyways, it's also done. I remember seeing Warren Huart comparing his SSL console comp with it and it sounded good. TLA also did a video using it, so I thought it should be in as well.

That makes for 11 contenders, I think that's more than enough.
For a blind shootout, this may already be too much to handle, but I'll definitely keep it as blind as this one, because I think that's the only meanigful way to do it and not least encouraged by a lot of you guys.

I hear that C grabs my attention a little more. Im listening that the lows are a touch more fuller and rounder. Almost the same thing happens with F.

An SSL mixbuss comp is just not the right comp for this kind of mix.

Fair enough. I know you know a thing or two about these. Since it was about the comp style, I chose the wrong multitrack then.;-)
But honestly, I don't see why an SSL wouldn't be appropriate for this type of music.

Ooh, intriguing. Which comp(s) comes to mind, if you had to try compressing it?

Its not really bringing anything to the table in terms of enhancement or improvement. To my ears its making your mix sound worse(at times making the bass notes blurry and at times shrinking the image).

Just from experience the SSL mixbuss compressor is a compressor that you want to use early on in the mix as you need to compensate along the way for its shortcomings. And sometimes those shortcomings leave alot to be desired. Lets just say its definitely not the kind of compressor I want to add in the end for that final "touch".

For your kind of song and mix the Focusrite Red 3 or 33609 became more a staple in the 90's and 2000's in terms of "that sound". But its the same as the SSL G comp in terms of adding it early in the mix.

As I stated in the opening post here, neither is this my mix as I had nothing to do with the production, nor is it a real mix but rather a polished rough.
The point here was to show differences between hard- and software iterations of this classic, nothing more, but nothing less. And at the time I had these multitracks lying around and liked them.

I have and use a Smart C1 for quite some time now and I do mix into it from the beginning and rarely change the settings. The occasions where I find it doesn't make the mix sounding better and more glued are very rare.

Is it possible to sidechain letting for example heavy guitars through?

Usually you use a sidechain HPF to let through Bass+Kick, guitars normally don't trigger the comp as much as the other two. On heavy music styles even more so.

Isn't there a dedicated sidechain key input on certain models so that it's not necessarily what's below the HPF and rather a certain frequency spectrum that bypasses compression? To let abnormal low-mids heavy Korn/SOAD type guitars through, without Buss Comp overglue making it too pop sounding.

Yes, there are some plugins or hardware which allow a dedicated SC input which can be modified beforehand, but a lot of them have no SC at all or just the HPF. Usually even higher volume low mid guitars around 300Hz don't trigger SSL comps
nowhere near as much like Kick+Snare and deep bass signals in general. In a Rock/Metal mix like SOAD or Korn the Drums mostly trigger the comp, cutting the lowmids in the guitar area and leaving intact the low end, would not really change the compression behaviour that much.

Just to be clear, by cutting some content out of a sidechain signal does not mean this area will not be affected by the comp, it just alters what triggers it. The comp still affects the entire frequency range. Otherwhise it would be some sort of multiband compressor.

The X-Rack bus compressor module from SSL has a true stereo sidechain input which can be processed any way you want.
