This is what you get when companies refuse to release the updates in sysex format and force you to use their updater. A sysex file would save so many people what you're facing.

I have been quietly reading this thread from the beginning and the release of this drum machine has just been a nightmare for all involved. I went through something similar with the beatstep pro some years ago. I know how frustrating it can be. I enjoy tinkering and learning and I am a "do it yourself" type but at the end of the day as a mortal being my time alive is limited and therefore my time is valuable at least to me.

Lets look at this from a few steps back and with fresh eyes. Most products are advertised and sold, should a product be defective it is recalled. You would send the defective product back and either receive a refund or a replacement unit that works correctly. There has been a known problem with this drum machine for some time, yet Behringer never asked to have these defective units returned. I am curious, if one takes their unit to music store or IT guy and pays to have their faulty unit repaired (updated) can they send the bill back to berhinger? Also if one does not have a computer and has no access to a computer ?

All this while trying to release a working drum machine. Let that sink in, its a drum machine, no new tech, nothing overly challenging and here we are all these months later. Here we are unplugging all our USB devices while incurring unnecessary stress with no compensation.

I have never had any issue with behringer or the concept of "cloning". Once the lawyers have their say and the courts rule I am happy to buy the product. I actually loved the whole concept of behringer. However with this RD8 release I question many things about this company

The original units should have been recalled, this would have shown pride by the company in their products

Once remedied, brand new fully functioning units should have been shipped out to the first loyal customers who ran out and bought one on good faith

The recalled units could be upgraded and donated to schools or the like.

With all the above and an apology it would have shown a company that takes pride in its brand and products.

Well at least we can try clearing the USB ports

My van got recalled because of dodgy software, they didnt give me a new one, they waited until the software guys had sorted it and then it was updated.

Did they (the manufacturer) update it at the dealership or did you do it at home by yourself ?

I'm sure it will end just fine. At least an rd8 doesnt cost as much as a moog one which also had firmware issues. In fact it seems to be very common these days to sell hardware with not quite right firmware which is a shame. When I buy something I want it to be right. I have worked hard to save money to spend on an item a want to enjoy. I do not want to regret my purchase as that is not only a waste of money but also the hard work to earn that money, the excitement that builds in anticipation and then the disappointment that it is not what you thought it was because of a software issue.

Initial release of something going wrong is nothing new and probably dates back to the dawn of the concept of a production line, it's just we're at a point in history where we can fix hardware faster than software.

Just look at the release of the new Prophet 5: two improperly installed capacitors and no loctite on some rather important screws. Fixed literally on a single Sunday.

Hell, the original TR808 had an issue on release, which is why early serial numbers have a very high pitched snare drum.

I dread to think how many people died when home electricals started to become common during the Edwardian period.

This is the generation that gave us such wonders as The Electric Tablecloth, because live wires woven into fabric is such a delightful idea and all that.

Did you fully install the Zadig USB driver?
I was getting this exact error screen. Turned out I had not in fact installed the driver properly.

I followed this (the Windows boot loader section) and it worked.

1. With the RD-8 turned off, connect it to your computer.
2. Go to the Zadig driver installer page*, and download the latest version.
3. Press and hold the recessed Boot button located next to the USB port on the RD-8 using a paper clip (or something of a similar size) and power the unit on.
4. The RD-8 does not light up while in Boot mode.
5. Launch the Zadig software, click Options, and select List All Devices.
6. In the dropdown box, select STM32 BOOTLOADER and click Replace Driver. The driver installation process may take a minute or two, so make sure not to disconnect the device or power it off."

After this the Synthtool update worked perfectly (though I updated to 1.3.5 first, which should not be necessary).

Looks like you are running the exe from directly from the zip file which may be causing issues. Try unzipping the file by dragging the exe to your desktop (or anywhere else) first and run it from there.

Ya know Matt this is how I see it too. I expect stuff to be right. I've bought a number of music tech this year and all have really stupid errors in their firmware. One that really grinds is Suzuki getting the drawbar attentation wrong! Plus 1' steps 1 and 2 are the same!? Just brainless.

I am beginning to think designing this tech is too much for companies now, maybe the designers of old have retired and the new generation are too busy fiddling with their iThing, not the same dedication.

From the comments on the rev 2 RD8 firmware it sounds like another half-baked attempt. If Uli wanted the sync/timing issues fixed asap but not concerned too much about the other things. That to me really says the code job is beyond them.

It's a good job some of us kept pointing out the errors otherwise it would be stuck a ver 1, mind you some of you were happy with that.

I ran it straight from the zip in Windows 10 with no problems, worthy a try though.

It took longer to read the update instructions than how long it actually took to do it the update. That was easy.

As far as I counted there are three revisions of RD8 hardware

1- rimzilla and non-shielded chassis
2- rimzilla and shielded (starting september 19)
3- reduced rim level and shielded (starting december 19)

I need this fixing badly.
I used to step-trigger my Roland CSQ600 with my real TR808.
The trigger outs from the RD-8 do not trigger the CSQ600 at all!

I cant use the RD8 and the RD6 to trigger my old synths, its so weird they cant make this things work.

Does the rd-6 trigger not work either?

i have only used it on my td3 and it works a charm on that

i have access to limited gear right now or i would go after other stuff

i know way back the arp would only accept a hit @ the trig input and not the gate and i raised that straight away , not sure if they upped the spike or not but i know folk are fine with the ms101 now and that didn't used to work

what in v2 sucks so bad it is half arsed? i am intrigued

right now without using synthtool we cannot do it as easily as we would like but open synthtool and it is a 2 second task

i have a sneaky workaround until it is done the more standard way, this has the caveat you cannot choose a patt: location so make sure your song is blank or use the synthtool app if you need to designate a specific patt: location

choose the patt you want to copy:

1: be in patt mode
2: hit rec
3: select patt
4: hit save and then choose a song (the blank one)


the pattern is now elsewhere as patt: #1

be aware this can be used to copy banks too

win7 from zip cocks it up the same way OP is saying, this is my experience at least and i have upgraded and downgraded about 45 times this last month

not saying that is the cause or the same for all but for me, unzip first or incomplete install

At least with the RD8 I can use the rimshot as a trigger but with the RD6 none of the sounds or the triggers can be used to play my old synths.
