i'd say 808. grew up listening to a lot of US techno, loving the 909 sound, but after a while i got a lot more into the 808. also for some reason it just doesn't sound outdated to my ears.
if it hasn't been obvious from all my other posts about it, the 808 has always been my favorite. i still love my 909 though. they compliment each other well....
you need to have both, clearly.
i always liked kirk better than picard, but i still like picard! Shitt...maybe i just like older stuff better?
plus, practically every drexciya track has an 808, if that doesn't sell it, what does?
also 808 now wins in price. that wasn't always the case, why i remember back in like 2005 you could get an 808 for $800 and a 909 would cost $1200. Now an 808 is $2000 and a 909 is like $1600. cept i got my 909 for cheap, that's probably one of the main reasons i got it (especially after having the 808 first)
Not hard for me: TR-909. Probably the result of too much Eurodance and early Detroit. The 808 does not take to being processed very well, the kick in particular. Which is why almost any appearance of it is dry or lightly compressed.
Which is not to say one is better than the other, gotta get them both! Very different machines.
For those of us who do not actually own or have owned either of them - yes, i know, shame on us - could you who have them post some actual rythm tracks/clips (processed or not, doesn't matter) that show off why you prefer one over the other?
I mean, i probably have a few versions of both in my collection of drum machines, but those are just copies (of copies) and the quality of clips of the actual machines themselves on the net (youtube) is usually atrocious, so a few nice mp3's would probably say more than many thousand words in this debate...
i think comparing an 808 to a 909 is kind of apples and oranges. i HATE the 909 hats and cymbals.. yeah i know.. EQ them and that helps a lot but they still make me wanna punch people in the face.
they can all be really funky groovy machines w/a little EQ/filtering...
808 all the way.The 909 is sweet as well but for some reason I hate the open high hat sound. Totally irrational on my part but I can't stand it. A)I think it's harder to make the 808 sound bad and B) compare the number of hip hop tracks that use the 808 as opposed to the 909. 909 kick and snare obviously RULES house and techno...I don't know. Yeah 808 all the way.
Forced to choose, there's NO competition for me- 808 trumps.
EVERY sound on the machine is gold. They went THROUGH cliche & came out the other side smelling of roses.
If I had to pick just three sounds to take to a dessert island, it would be the 808 Kick, Cowbell & Hi-Hat.
In defense of the 909, I totally here what people are saying about that hat... but when used wisely it can be striking exactly because of its over used cliched status.
I've got both and prefer the 808 about 75% of the time. The 909 is good, but the hats give it an instant 90s dance music sound which tends to make it a little less versatile.
If given the choice I'd probably take an 808 + 606 than an 808 + 909.
that's like asking: you'd rather like food or air ? :D
they have such a different sound, i don't know how one can even compare them so broadly.
but yes, both of them, definitely! (plus the 606, the 707 & the 727...)
o.x.o.x.o.x.o.x. with o=909 kick and x=ophat makes me feel =>
I just had enough of 909 for the rest of my life. Started listening techno early in 90's. While at that time this way my favorite kick and hat... given it was used in about every song of that era, i got sick of it.
So in the late 90's when many preferred 303 + 909 combo i was more into 101 + 808. Simply because it was different... kind of exotic sounding.
I guess if i had to make a choice i slightly prefer the 808.
Ive had both for many years, would quite like a 606 too but they are a bit pricey now i think.
