Listen to the great records by Al Green,Teddy Pendergrass,Otis Redding,Sam and Dave,PHillipe Winne of the Spinners,Aretha Franklin and you will understand.
People like Musiq Soul Child,John Legend,Alicia Keys,IMHO really suck in the real soul department.
Thats not the shit I was taught to be soul music,no sir.
Its just watered down dribble.
Im just spoiled by the greats and blessed to have been there.

I hear you. As a classic (Ol'Skool) Dude and Artist I was there as well during the days when music had "soul." I'm a baby of the 60's, child of the 70's, teenage of the 80's, young adult of th 90's and grown man from there. I was taught how to play the piano and to read and write music during the 70's but my Mom (and us) were too poor to keep going with the lessons. All of it by now is out of my head unfortunately. I've lived, seen, and heard soul in both R&B and Hip Hop. I've had the pleasure of being on stage with a lot of bands, singers, DJ's (I used to be one myself but I'm waaaaaaaaaayyyyyy retired...and we're talking about the Technic 1200's, Numarks, Cerwin Vega and Klispch days). Yes, a lot of the music we call "music" has no soul and that falls on a lot of things. Soul can be programmed but of course when it's musicians playing the instruments it's more authentic...no question on that at all. I've freestyled hip hop verses during "unplanned jam sessions" with band playing different types of instruments. Even Spoken Word Poets can rock the mic while traditional jazz (although I love Smooth Jazz...I'm talking about the type of jazz where things are not "programmed") is playing. Music in itself is nothing...it's the person or persons playing the instruments or programming the music. Hip Hop used to have "soul" in it as it came from "Soul Music." I was right there in 1974 when the older Katz were rhyming and singing to band music and even when programmed beats and music came into play, there was still "soul" in it. Soul is syncopated and unsyncopated but it always depends upon the person making the music and the vocalist as well. Whodini's "One Love" has lot's of soul in it. When it first comes on, you already know it's them. The same with "Papa Was A Rollin Stone" by The Temptations. It starts with the bass player and you already know it's their song before the rest of the instruments come in. That is what's missing from music today as a whole: the setup, the emotion, the message, and the finish. People think I crazy because I"m a Lizz Wright Fan...but that's something else altogether. Remember when one man said Jazz is "The Assassination of Syncopation?"
Don't get me wrong, I"m about real music and what I mean by "real" is music that has a soul and a message to it. I definitely agree that the "soul" of music is left out all across music genres in the mainstream and especially a lot of the modern R&B and Hip Hop artists. I'm a musician in my head meaning I can hear the instruments playing in symphony but I don't have the ability to learn and play instruments so I do it with samples and loops. However, just like true musicians change up everything throught their song, I emulate them with how I do my hip hop songs. I'm still getting my equipment together so I can redo all of my songs from scratch so that's why I don't have any music up yet. I may not change up the beat (a little here and there) but the instruments do change and that's because I like creating a song instead of just a track. A lot of people don't even know the difference between the two.
Just my two cents, Bruh!
