Eucon is a very stable protocol, but currently owned by Avid, which means that DAW companies and controller companies cannot access this code.
They can access and use the code, but not for anything. Letting Steinberg and others use the code for controllers that Avid sells is good for Avid (and good for us, since Avid controllers are good).

I personally think that sooner or later companies like Steinberg or Presonus and some others will make their own controllers with their own implementation codes, as Avid has done with the purchase at the time of euphonix. Time will tell, if it happens, if any of these solutions will end up being a standard that ends up burying the old Mackie protocol.
Any time a new company comes out with a new controller they'll want to protect the investment, meaning they'll end up doing what Avid did - maybe allowing others to use the protocol for the controller. Steinberg has had several controllers, "Houston", the touch series, the "CC121" and Nuage (Yamaha), and then there was WK-Audio's "ID". All basically gone now.
It's a tough segment to break into and remain profitable in.
