Yeah, I'm years late to this thread, and came across it in a unrelated search, but found it a damn interesting read... and especially with the time that has passed...

like to hear how it's working out for them since they went to the race to the bottom model....

As far as I can tell, nothing has changed.

So it's been a few weeks, but the TL/DR here is:

-guy makes blog post fundamentally missing some important things as explained by Etch and others

-touts service as avoiding the problems plaguing the past and blasts other services

-gets it somewhat handed to him, as doesn't understand race to the bottom properly..

-disappears

-years later his service has become just like those he made pariah's in his original blog post....

An update-- Linked In shows that the Music Vine founder has gone on to start a new company called Uppbeat, which has very predatory terms.

I find it interesting that in 2024, Vine Music seems to be doing exactly what Lewis said wouldn't happen--offering clients $400/year subscriptions to use music in perpetuity. And he's listed as the company's current CEO. IJS...

Is this the type of service that most low budget film production use these days?

It’s a good business model for the company and a good source of content for content creators.

I believe that many established composers here could create a business just like Uppbeat using their existing catalog. It would probably be a nice side hustle for those of you who have a large catalog of music and other unfinished pieces of music that could be used.

I'd love to see a statement from even one of their top ten artists....

No shit the "artists" are the beating heart of their business. (until they get better at their AI generated at least)...

How many times to we have to hear this pitch of bullshit year after year after decade....

Not sure, but I can tell you as a reality TV Editor, a lot of post production all over the country uses them. Even hit shows.

Yeah, I can imagine that being the case, and ultimately it really sucks for artists, as the money on it is crap, and with his previous history etc..

Works for him a hell of a let better then it does for those who made the content you guys are using.... but I understand that you need searchable material and whatnot and ease of use and license and whatnot in what you are doing absolutely, and while recognizing that some of the IP of the aggregation of, say, a Music Dealers back when, obviously took some construction and work... and (most) everyone needs someone to be selling their stuff or getting it in front of people....

But this race to the bottom and trickle down nothing on the dollar to the artists is pretty sad.

A legend. I miss Etch. He talked alot of sense.

I always loved Etch's comments and insights without question.

It's a mystery. I did ask where he was once but it got deleted.

Etch is around. Very busy with the Company he works for/with. Just spoke with him via Txt last week. He's not around GS much (if ever) though....
