Actually, now, 2012... this is the first year where I feel
you could do top-tier quality work with that list. Good albums
have been made using worse hardware. I'll still use OTB tools
that offer something unique, but it's a choice between something
good and something else good. Variety vs. Quality.

take a look at the CDSoundmaster Drum collection for Nebula - it offers quite a unique toolset for inside the computer...compression with some nice tone and analogue characteristic...I would not feel too bad about doing a mix completely in the box with Nebula EQ, Saturation and this drum program set...(Ill still keep some hardware tho

So much of what I do with compressors is BPM/Groove specific
that I long for more control. It's getting better. Reminds me
of EQs before nebula, like those old TriTone Digital ones circa
2006-2008. It's closer, maybe even some of the best ITB,
but not quite there yet.

Even with Neb EQs, I find myself tracking through analog,
using EQuality to touch up, then using 1 instance of Nebula on
the busses to sweeten, maybe 2 tops for HPF. Nothing beats
the 4K HPF

The Klanghelm is extremely versatile but requires dialing in. I find it very useful for problem tracks and the internal sidechain facilities are excellent. It can't really do 1176 type squash as it's just not fast enough but it can really help with problem tracks. It's a must buy at the price.

haha - yeah - I want it to work also...Im like the smoking cancer guy in the shadows quietly suggesting the possibility to those I hope might recognise its potential...

so far I think its pretty excellent but agree that its not so controllable and you cant be extreme esp with bass heavy stuff...you have to be selective and careful so its quite different to the experience of hardware or algo plugs. So yeah still certainly got its kinks.

I think if you have some good OTB sound sources with some colour on the way in - clean effective algo plugs are fine...but if you are using a lot of samples and ITB sounds the added musicality of Nebula is a big plus as you stack up processing...I found some of the ALL programs (favorite) has some real analogue pumpin vibe...

Anyways with some good algo plugins (most listed here) and Nebula - plus a few pieces of analogue hardware - the hybrid set-up can be pretty excellent...

Edit, MUST add VCC to my list

In looking for a nice vintage styled EQ (not UAD, can't afford) that can push the highs with a crisp sound and has a beefy lower mid for pushing the chest resonance of a vocal out.

I've been postponing my plugin purchase for quite too long now, so I will make my final decisions during the following week.

If some of you are interested in giving me more choices, let me know what we have missed.

I decided not to go with Nebula for now, because it seems to me like too much of a hassle Also I don't want to have too many options/plugins in my DAW, because I feel it will only slow down my process too much. For some reason, I'm also very skeptic about Steven Slate plugins (although Trigger is good). Don't ask me why, maybe I just don't like the guy.

I keep needing to update, the new ShadowHills comp from UAD works great on literally everything I've thrown at it. Individual drums, drumbuss, guitars, brass, vocals, bass and mixbuss. There's nothing it does not shine on

It's totally a weird comment but I know the feeling. Something about the way that guy comes off in his promo that just rubs me the wrong way. I've never actually met him in person so no real actual problem with him. Can't put my finger on it exactly, I sort of get a cross between a used car salesman and one of those guys that cuts in front of you in a lineup at exactly the kind of bar I try to avoid. Again, this is only from the vibe I get from his promo material. Might be the over confidence thing thing that gets to me or something. Perhaps he's honestly just that proud of his product. Seems a little try hardy to me though. Somehow I got it in my mind that his passion is making money rather than making the best tools for the craft.

Either way I guess there's nothin wrong with it as long as the end result is the same. If tools actually meet the insane hype, why do I need to like his promo persona. I wonder about some of the posts in the Slate threads. Often read them with massive grains of salt.

Now I feel like an A-hole for judging this guy based on his promo material. I'll make my next plugin purchase one of his then. Hopefully hat'll make me feel better. If his tape plugin lives up to the hype I'll buy the rest as $$ permit. Currently lacking in hardware more so though.

You will not be disappointed with vtm, VCC, or fgx at all. I don't own vtm but I demoed it and loved it.. I just haven't boughten it because I own Masseys Tapehead, so the need for it wasn't as great as it was for vcc or fgx. Vbc looks amazing though.

Also, his company has great support.. I upgraded from RC tube to VCC full a few days ago and ended up loosing the RC tube license as a part of the ilok replacement system. Even though I now had RC tube in the full VCC, this was a big problem for backwards compatibility in the sense that I needed to open old sessions and be able to recall old settings in the RC tube. I emailed them on the weekend, while support was supposed to be offline..and they emailed me back and deposited a new license into my account within the hour. It was impressive since most company's dont give support while support is offline. I now have both a VCC and RC tube license.

Maybe Steven is just not the right person to promote his own stuff, at least for me I can see his way of speaking about his products makes an impression on many of the ITB guys out there though. Slick guy.

I might sound like an a-hole by saying this but: He seems like a guy who's a well known professional mixing engineer but there is hardly any information about him on the net, of his past doings and what not... He seems to know a lot about mixing and mastering and playing the drums and... Well basically everything you know He has got his cool-looking hardware, plugins and groundbreaking DAW controllers (raven) and his tape sim, mastering compressor/limiter and EQ's seem to be the best there is, as far as he and the others who have gone with the hype say. Well, to be fair, I have not heard any of the top engineers talk about his stuff yet (is this just professionals not wanting to promote his stuff in public, I don't know) or any of the studios I know for that matter.

Ok, so maybe Steven just hit the jackpot when he found their genius computer programmer who does the best algorithms in the world. Who knows. The drum library he really got his name from does not impress me though...

and if He read this: sorry for the slaughter Steven.

I believe in the idea that everyone has their own opinions, but I have two questions:

Why does a top engineer need to have something to say about it for it to be good?
How's come you haven't demoed them yourself? Even if you didn't like his personality, his plugs could still be good to you..

My all time favorite plug ins? I've only been a heavy plug in user this year so my picks might seem odd to some.
1. Reason. I know its not technically a plug in but I use it like one.
2. Addictive Drums. I just love multisampled drums and this is so easy to go in and create your own drum sounds with.
3. Philaharmonik or however its spelled either way I love it for strings. Its light weight works really well for my music and fits in a mix.
4. Addictive Keys. I fell in love the minute I got my hands on its Rhodes patches. I love love love it!
5. Amplitube its just a great fx plug in for me and I am not a guitarist. I use it on everything.

This isn't in any specific order and it was hard to pick just 5. I wanted to mention Razor, Kontakt player, Diva, Sylenth, and a lot of others but we only had 5 slots.
