AT5 is way better than AT4. The Axe FX 2 is clearly better though (but way more expensive - I got a bargain on a used one).

The thing is though, I often thrown down recordings using AT5 just to be lazy. I promise myself I'll reamp it with the Axe FX 2 at mix time. I never do though - I find that the mix is cooking fine with AT5. I'm always shooting for just straight Vox/Marshall/Fender amp tones though, nothing too special.

I agree. I've been using solely Fender amps and Leslie. Although I'd like to know if there are better alternatives, as I haven't actively compared other alternatives.

Both! as Elevate basically was broken down into it's parts, you have the separate modules, so can totally use Saturate the eq, transient shaper during mixing.
Saturate is awesome and not too heavy on CPU,
Elevate though, for my old iMac is to much for mixbus.

As you will have no doubt noted from my other posts - I seriously rate the Softube Marshall amps. Love my Neural DSP suites. I also think if you want to get to a good solid sound quickly then THU is very underrated for such tasks - not as dynamic as other sims but sits well in to mix straight away ime and very quick to get to what you are after with all the rigs available for purchase - just get the ones which suit your needs the best.

However - I also like AT5 and think it sounds good. Not the best but still very good imo. So I differ with ER on that point and feel it is more to do with his IK frustrations overall than it is to do with AT5 in particular but maybe he can clarify.

Guitar Rig by NI is undoubtedly the weakest on the market imo but I can even get great sounds out of that if I want so I feel there can be no excuses in this day and age. The bar has been set high - us guitarists are very lucky when I think back to my first digitech fx pedal years ago lol.

The one thing I am interested in that ER might know about, being a fan of Spitfire, is this new Amp thing they are giving away free with a purchase over £299 this BF. Be interested to hear what ER thinks about that one.

Fender Collection 1 is my favorite followed by the Mesa/Boogie Collection.

There are always alternative; whether they are better for what you do - you have to figure that out for yourself. As to alternative amps there's stuff from PA where you can go from clean to as crunchy as you want. The Engl and Diezel amps are excellent. What PA doesn't have is the selection of fx that AT5 has. I've been known to use the fx from AT5 while muting the amp & cab with an external amp sim. Then there's the Softube stuff that's quite good.

And yes - with some caution all I've mentioned can be used with other than guitar input. Take a good B3 emulation and feed it into a Marshall sim say like from Softube and get that Jon Lord sound (he did NOT use Leslies). I don't like the Marshalls in Amplitube (any version). They sound nothing even remotely like a Marshall.

A big second on the Softube Marshalls - that's where AT5 falls down. BTW - have you tried the Lemmy Murder One emulation from Softube?

I have Guitar Rig 5 and haven't used it in a dog's age. It saved me from the drought when IK dropped AT4. AT4 for me was a step back from AT3.

Haven't tried it yet but loved Lemmy - just loved his character and wish there were more like him in the music industry nowadays.

I'll definitely give it a try and because I love my amp sims I'll probably end up getting it.

EDIT: I've actually had the pleasure of mixing some of Lemmy's material - not professionally but through Pro Mix Academy Motorhead files.

You could use the Chorus CH-2 by Alessandro Gallo.
There you can pan each one of the delay lines, but 1 or 2 is enough.
You could put that after a PA bass amp sim, those have interesting saturation and overdrive behavor. You may try dfferent speakers, and turn on the tweeter option.
Then, use some ambience, but also panned differently from the amp or chorus outputs.
Some Rhodes sources need attack enhancement, perhaps SPL Attacker can do something or any transient designer. You can just let the attack distort when you play with a lot of dynamics.

My opinion, AT5 has great sounds in it and is easy to dial in - of course I'm used to IK's modeling I've been using Amplitube as a serious alternative to recording real amps since like 2010, and used it professionally to do demos etc. without issue. Used to have to bypass the cabs to use IRs for the best sound quality, but AT5 has good cab sim also so that's been a nice improvement.

Some of the older Amp models from back in the day aren't as exciting but I have recorded this year with the old Engls and the Jimi Hendrix collection gear which is all like 2012-2013 and loved the results, and some folks have noted they liked the guitar tones in some tracks this year too, all AT5 thus far. I also use it on bass on tracks. The newer models have wow factor for me, and there is some awesome and uncommonly modeled gear in their more recent collections.

As far as IK software generally, I just got done with that awesome group buy and I keep loving what a bunch of the software I got does for me. Sampletron 2, Sunset Reverb, Comprexxer and more are in my tracks right now big time. Also never had any issues with their CS, Peter has always been cool to me and answered questions. I am pretty easygoing and try not to argue on the internet, takes too much time and focus away from creativity and the pursuit of the ethereal muse (things I'd almost always prefer to be doing versus going back and forth in heated posts) - not to mention talking about gear with cool people like this thread!

I do like other modern Amp Sim tech too of course, working on a track now that uses a few Nembrini Sims which I got into after trying and liking a bunch of the models he did for Brainworx/UAD (especially love the Fuchs models he did but after the Pete Thorn signature sale brought the rest to $29.99 before vouchers I got all of them I wanted at about $9 a plugin average and have been quite pleased, some are amps that AT5 doesn't model). I have also thought about getting Neural Gojira or Cory Wong in the current sale, more processed sound but it's huge right out of the box and I liked their effects also.

All this tech I find very exciting, it feels like we can do things in the box today that have never been this possible. Love the sonic playground.

Amp Sim-wise I've been having good luck with the Amplitube Fender 2 Collection. I also have the Orange collection which I haven't played with yet, but is also supposed to be good. I do think the updated cabinet models and impedance/gain-staging (or whatever tweaks they did to the older amps) changes did make some of the older amps usable. I find, in general, that AT5 is less polished by default than other sims, and may be more like what you would get if you mic'd an amp (with all the inherent low rumble, etc). Throwing on a preamp (like the Neve emulation in AT5) and/or other plugins you would use in a general mic'd amp recording chain will get you much closer to the recorded guitar sound you are used to hearing.

Other than that, I agree on the Softube Marshalls, they sound fantastic in a mix. I have the UAD version of a couple of the Marshalls, but per high praise from an experienced member on thegearpage.com I am eyeing the Marshall edition of Softube's Amp Room. I am curious how their Fender stacks up to others I have.

I also have most of the lower gain models from Brainworks, but have been using those less since AT5 came out. I would say I like their Ampegs for bass or guitar a lot, and their Orange amp also sounds great.

I also highly recommend the Fender Tweed from UAD if you are in the ecosystem. It is one of the best when it comes to the feel of a real tube amp & sounds really great.

I also recently got a Suhr Reactive Load so I can use my tube amp direct. So many options, so little time! Great time to be recording guitars.

Also I will swear upon my saxophone that Amplitube 5 is a great amp sim suite. Maybe not the best at every single sim, but there's so much in there, and so much of it is good to great, that it's my #1 pick and I've been playing guitar since the 1990's.

I also like some of the Plugin Alliance sims, and the Waves PRS SuperModels. And the LePou HyBrit. And the Softube (new to me, but great.)

Line 6 Helix has great effects but I wasn't convinced by the amps themselves. Anyway those are my quick mentions. :-D

And, to me, Dan's video isn't even the best one. Check the one from Gear Grotto on Kotelnikov GE (sad that the guy never really made too many videos, it's amazing).

Amplitube 5 has been getting heavy use on a little project I started with a couple of coworkers over the last long lock-down we went through in Melbourne. One's a drummer, other's a guitarist, we've just been sending each other home recordings and seeing what happens. Basically every guitar sound has Amplitube 5 Fender on it, although the solo in Dangerous Cats was run through my Matriarch which was basically used as a big wah pedal, with some delay and feedback patching. I tend to not push Amplitube too hard, most of the drive on my own guitar (the big minor chords in Cardshark) comes from Earthquaker Plumes before it hits the preamp.

The drummer's practice room isn't exactly an ideal recording environment so I'm looking forward to getting him in a better space, but it's nice to be working with live drums even if they are a little boxy. Anyway these are a few roughies, feedback welcome

The only criticism I have is the tunes sound like they need a lead vocal, or a lead melody on some solo instrument...saxophone? Haha, I just got a saxophone. Something you could hum along to is needed. Especially Card Shark which sounds kind of bare. Guitars sound great! I like how you pushed the compressors on everything, I always love that kind of pushed tone.
