Yeah, one’s location and local tax/customs can be a bitch and a game changer. Do 3U mics have similar tax/customs for your country? They’re also made in China.

I had no VAT nor customs when shipping from Australia to Taiwan for my BeesNeez Oliver Fet. For the record, I don’t think I’d have to pay customs/tax for 3U mics either due to trade negotiations, but the Oliver was a bit cheaper.

I know you can find the Vanguard v13 discounted at certain times on reverb, like now for instance. Same with peluso mics.

I’d love to hear the gz12/gz251/gz67 vs BeesNeez Oliver fet, vanguard v13 and peluso p12 on mono drum OH, acoustic guitar and male vox. ****, throw in the new warm wa47 tube mic while we’re at it.

It’s a pipe dream but they’re all similarly priced and the demos all sound good so far.

Pretty sure in the UK we'd pay 20% VAT plus import duty for the 3U Audio mic's. The Vanguard price was from a UK distributor. When I eventually get my mic(s) from Barbaric Amplification, I'm hoping he'll declare the price half what I actually pay, thus save on some VAT.

I've been reading the thread for about a few hours now, going up to page 18 or so. I'm pretty intrigued with these microphones, especially since they seem affordable! I've only by far used cheap sounding condensers and my tenor voice does not compliment it, ending up sound okay but never "round" or "smooth" in the top end. De-essing helps only to some degree. I would give anything for something easy on the ears and takes EQ well. Anything from 3u that comes to mind?

You could always give a ribbon mic a go as well as 3U condensers. NoHype audio LRM-2 is great and inexpensive. What's great about the Warblers is the three position switch. This would help with altering the top end to taste.

Try Warbler IV, that one is really smooth.

I've been keeping track of this thread for months with some interest, but only recently purchased a 3U Audio mic -- I found a used Black CM-3 for $85 which was a no-brainer! Plugged it in to try it on my voice and was immediately impressed -- very smooth -- detailed but no harsh qualities. Used it the other day for a drum room mic, it sounded very good in that application. Will be using it on many sources I'm sure, and will be buying more 3U Audio mics in the future...

Apologies if this is buried in the thread and I just didn't go back for enough to find it, but now that they've been out in the wild for a while I'm curious to hear some feedback on the 127's for overheads and acoustic guitar. Ragan, looking in your direction...

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to use them (or any other mics) as much as I’d like. I went back to school (for EE) in the fall and I’m just slammed.

I’ve been there, it’ll be worth it. Maybe I’ll have to pick up a pair myself and give it a try.

It'd be a lot easier if I didn't wait till I was 38 with a 3-year-old and a 6-month-old at home but, alas, I was busy playing in a band for like 13 years.

How much better is the Warbler MKID compared to the Black CM1 on the Warbler's most similar voicing? Is it a different capsule, or is it just the circuit that's better? And does the CM1 have corrective EQ or is it a special capsule with less high end than a normal K67 style capsule?

I already have the Black CM1 and really like it, but in the future if I need to upgrade I know the CM1 uses a surface mounted transformerless design so it's probably not moddable.

Also interested in how the Warbler MKID compares to other U87 clones. The Warbler sounds much better on paper because it has alright sensitivity (though I would prefer it higher), multiple voicings (not a huge thing for me though as I would probably only use the flattest setting), and a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz rather than having a more limited frequency response.

Finally got on the 3U train and just got a Warbler 127 Omni Flat in today.

First impression: I f*ckin' LOVE it. I was too lazy to set up my usual gobos, but even in a really unideal spot in my room, it managed to make my somewhat crappy, low end Martin actually sound good. With totally dead strings, to boot.

Didn't even have to mess around with mic position, either — the most typical spot imaginable (12th fret, about 8 - 12 inches away) worked almost instantly. When I did try a different position, it didn't sound inferior, just different. I can easily see this allowing me to place the mic according to taste, rather than having to hunt around for a spot where it doesn't sound utterly terrible.

I love that there's a HPF built-in and I LOVE the dynamics of this thing. It does a fantastic job of folding in transients without feeling murky or sluggish, and it also has a naturally "compressed" sort of feel. This means I also don't have to fuss about with different kinds of picks — I just grabbed whatever was on my desk and it worked.

This is a stark contrast to my Manley Ref C, which, despite being one of the best vocal mics I've owned, tends to reveal every ugly characteristic of that guitar, to the point where no mic placement is anywhere near usable. Just a total mismatch for that guitar.

As a side note, I still can't believe how FAST this thing shipped. It seriously took about 4 days from China to Orlando. Guosheng, as expected, was an absolute pleasure to work with. Just an all-around great experience.

I don't an to always go on about Barbaric Amplification, but if 3U Audio don't have anything just right for your C12 needs, then Chris would build you one for u see $1000.

I always feel like custom mics and mic mods are a bit of a gamble. Maybe it seems more risky than it is?

I just want to hear the mic I might buy on the source I record most. At this point though, all of my top choices are gambles.

Well, assuming you know a C12 would do the trick (if you had the money for one) just ask him to make you best C12 clone he can for $1000. He does often use the 3U capsules (amongst others).

I too have been considering a pair of the gz12s for overheads for a while now. I love the c12 sound on overheads, but like you say, it's a big gamble to buy them without hearing them.

I've been using some of the other 3u mics on overheads, and they are good. For the price they are great.
