Great stuff ! lots to listen to and battle option anxiety during the process I still think warbler 1 is my fav though . And the darkest of them all markV seems very cool .

For anyone who is interested in what the 3U warbler MK1 sounds like on rap vocals in the context of a mixed track.

Hope this helps those looking to use a warbler series mic for rap vocals!

This is a sample of vocals on three miss from 3U Audio, Warbler MKIV D (voice 1), GZ67fet, and GZ47fet V. Only the vocals were recorded with these mics. All microphones were in cardio pattern, no pad, and no filter. The all capsules were as close together as possible and at the same height and depth. I set the gain on the mics to be equal on the way in to an Apogee Quartet. The GZ67fet and GZ47fet V were at the same gain setting while the MKIV D needed to be set a little higher. All three mics recorded the same take.

The singer is female, alto, and stood about 25" away from the microphones with no pop filter. The song is Gary Clark Jr.'s The Healing.

The recording room is an office that is treated with Auralex foam squares and bass traps.

I'm a novice at tracking, mixing, mastering, room treatment, mic placement so my inexperience may show.

The samples with just the vocals have no effects, however I did noticed the music from the headphones bled into the recording . The samples with the vocals in the mix have some compression and reverb, nothing else. This was a quick mix effort. These files are uncompressed (about 18MB, 1:09 minutes) so may take a minute to load depending on your internet speed.

...absolutely love that GZ47fet V on female vocals (solo'd)...in the mix, any of the three sound very workable...going to take some close repeated listening to pick a favorite in the mix...thanks for posting!

im not gonna lie the teal cm-1 sounds very good for a little over 100 bucks. very smooth and bright clear sound for 100 bucks range mics. im willing to buy that. sounds much better than most mics in its price range thats for sure. thanks for pushing these 3u audio mics. the specs look good too. idk about the other more expensive 3u mics not really interested in them yet but ya may one day buy the teal cm-1 for spoken word stuff. god im poor lol. meh upon further listening the top end bugs me some sounds kinda cheapy. never mind hype train derailed brah

Great clips. Really helpful comparison. I'm with KV. That GZ47FetV is smoky delicious. They all sound good and totally workable, but I love that mic on her voice.

I agree with you. its good for 100 dollars and theres a lot more expensive mics that give a crappy overall sound too that i dont like but the cheapy 100 dollar sound characteristics are there so obviously you have to pay more for quality even if its the mighty hype train werblahfrghbjfb. i think some of the extremely expensive mics around here by akg (especially) and neumann get way too much hype when honestly they sound so bad that these warbler mics actually do walk all over them.

i meant to say some versions of the akg 414 and akd c214 sound like complete garbage. so yeah just about any mic that costs a few 100 bucks to make with a better overall sound are gonna kick the akg's butt but rather than saying the warbler is mighty you should be saying the akg is garbage over hyped filth that needs to be knocked down a few pegs around here.

My preference is also the GZ47fet V. I'll try them on acoustic guitar next along with the GZ74.

the teal one i dont like but i love the black cm-1. i will be buying one and maybe the warbler 1 if i can find price for it.

The mics were pointed at the 12th fret. The guitar was about 25" away from the mics. I did some strumming and fingerstyle. The guitar is a Taylor GC 12fret all Koa with Martin Retro (monel) strings (12s). An Ultex .73mm pick was used on the strumming samples. My finger nails and pads were used on the fingerstyle samples.

While there seemed to be a clear difference in these mics when tracking vocals, I've listened to these samples and it is hard to tell the difference between them. So much so I went back in exported the samples again to make sure I hadn't just exported the same thing over and over again.

Thanks for these. You're right, they're much closer on guitar than on vox. I can hear the differences but it's slight in this example. I do prefer, by a small margin, the top end on both the GZ67Fet and the GZ47Fet V. Any of them would work though for sure.

If you get a chance, I'd love to hear those GZ74 SDC's on acoustic too.
