Hi gearslutz! I'm in the game for a new pair of active monitors I will mix mostly Hip-Hop/Funk/Electronic music, so... I LOVE how the BM5A's sound and I think I will purchase these but in spring 2010 the new MKII series came out and they have more power and can go deeper. The price difference is only $50 but I heard only negative things about the MKII series by Dynaudio. I really enjoy listenting to music with the BM5A's while at the same time I can trust my mixes thats what i like on Dynaudio speakers! Anyone compared the MKII's to the old ones?

There seems to be a lot of negative feedback about the bm6a mk2's! but i havent heard bad things about the 5a's mk2!
I actually got a pair of bm5a's mk2 about a month ago! i heard the mk1 at the store and got them to order me the mk2's. unfortunatly when i wanted to test both side by side, they had sold the last pair of mk1's. so its hard to say how different they sound.

But from what i hear, they sound very similar (as said, not side by side). The mk2s seem to have a few little upgrades and they definatly look sluttier (thoug not on pictures!)

what about the bass on the mk2's? do you think they can go deep enough?

I have both BM5a and BM5a MKII hooked up to a BM9s subwoofer. Comparison done by Martin W in above post is accurate. BM5a MKII has a lot more bass and emphasis on lower-mid. I set high frequency pass at 60Hz so the LFE performance is irrelevant. I will have to say, BM5a sounds a bit sweeter, cleaner. and pairs better with a sub.

i had heard the mkI before and decided to buy the mkII. i dont have a direct comparison, but i as far as my research went, they actually didnt change much! just the waveguide and some added power for the amps.
i would definatly recommend the bm5a mkII!

I know this is an old thread but I'd like to add a little information here:

I just got the BM5A MKII and I think when everything is set to flat, the low end is a little too 'boomy' not in a natural way. I also feel like the high and high mid can use a little more detail. It sounds like the low end depends too much on the cabinet and is like a resonant bass sound if that makes any sense.

As far as listening - Modern electronic music sounds really good on them but not so much for classic acoustic stuff. Compared to my vintage Dynaco speakers, it doesn't sound anywhere near as natural and not what I would call flat. It's lacking somewhere in the mids and high end. Also the low end is not really flat. I am using them w the highpass filters at the moment to cut down some of the bass.

I never heard the MK1 but I'd sacrifice some low end if everything else was flatter. I am not in a treated room and near walls but I suspect I would have a similar opinion in ideal conditions.

For music production they seem OK so far and sampled instruments sound good. Haven't tried any mixes yet so I can't say how well the mixes translate.
