Starter gear (with questions)
Hey, everyone
So, no, I'm not asking for advice about what gear to buy . . . at least not yet. There's a long story, but I've ended up with a collection of gear that I didn't personally select, but I'm interested in working with. My main quest here is to find out the best ways to, well, play with these things. In the truest sense of the word play.
I'm a long-time fan of trance, ambient, acid jazz, progressive house, trip-hop, and downtempo stuff as well. I mostly want to just make music for myself, but it would be cool to be able to do something live at one of the burn events I go to (everything would probably have to be battery powered for that).
So, the gear I have so far:
- Korg Minilogue XD
- Korg Volca FM 2
- Korg Volca NuBass
- Korg Volca Drums
- Novation Circuit Tracks
I'm not opposed at all to using a DAW in post-production (I'd prefer it, actually), but I also just love having something physical to touch while I'm playing around.
I've got a pretty good grasp on music theory, but I'm just getting into synths. The FM 2 scares me a little bit from what I've read about it and FM synthesis in general and its learning curve, but I'm going to keep it around. From what I've read, it sounds like it will be great for creating pads once I learn what I'm doing.
So, out of everything I have, let's say I wanted to get my start with creating either progressive house, trance, or ambient music. Yes, I know that's a wide net. What advice would you have for me, given the gear I currently own?
