Has anyone heard of a Russian company selling ribbon mics and mic preamps under the name montigomo on eBay? The the ads come complete with sound samples. I couldn't find much on the net.

I suppose its based in the same town as Oktava manufacture - TULA.
Those sound examples really impressed me, btw.

They highs are unexpected (for me) for a ribbon mic. I have sold my two Royer R122 and ask myself if I keep my AEA R88 !

WOW.. Ive seen these on eBay and was looking for a cheaper alternative to putting up my Royer 121 in situations that it could get damaged. So your saying its comparable to the Royer tone even on the top end?

chandrasekar - How would you say the build quality is?

I saw my tracking and mine showed up today. I play in doing an A/B test with my Royer R121 and will post results. I will see if I have time to put up some sound files of the two so everyone can hear.

OK, I just got the mic in and decided to do a quick, down and dirty comparison to my Royer 121. I removed the Royer from its cradle and slid the Russian clone in its place. I had it in front of a Marshall 412 cabinet going to an API pre. Ripping through my favorite JCM800 which I know well. I did in A/B comparison to the two microphones. The mid range of the Russian Mic is not quite as smooth as the Royer, but definitely held its own and sounded quite remarkable considering it cost a fraction of what it's trying to emulate. I will post some sound files when I can.

I purchased a pair of these and was totally knocked off my chair by the sensitivity of them and the smoothness of the tone. Here's what I feel they will do REAL good.

* Accoustics - It will pick up the tone and the percussive nature of that instrument like few other microphones can or will.
* Drum Overheads - It will add some real nice working tone to drums and cymbals at a sensitivity rate that is better than my typical SM81 setup.
* Guitars - Great tone to mix with a SM57 alongside of the cone. Just killer.
* Vocal Overheads - This mics sensitivity is incredible for putting them above singer(s) head and pick up some great room and sibilance to mix into a vocal buss.
Makes a world of diff

My least fav place for these or this type of Royer 121 sound is for main tracking of the vocals. It's REAL easy to blow into the ribbon and rumble it up. However, this is not the fault or issue with the manufacturer, but the characteristics of the mic itself. If you do not buy these mics I think you are almost insane cause at this price with 2 shocks and holders, you would have to steal a pair of Royers to get a better deal, and then you are in for the gas for the travel if you do...so....no...buy these instead :-) ha

Any more info/testimonials about these things? I just found out about them and am pretty interested.

I listened, but there's no information about setup and the clips are limited in scope. They sound good in the ebay listing, but of course it does, they're trying to sell it. I'm just looking for more impartial and in depth info from people who have bought them, that's all.

Here is a testimonial... I bought one..love it and just ordered a 2nd unit.. These units are too good to pass up at $200.00. It hangs so close to my Royer R121 im getting a stereo pair before he runs out or raises his price. My guess is if your waiting for dozens of glowing reviews and pile of sound files, they will be all gone or selling for $400.00... Go ahead... wait... lol.. it will be your loss.

Setup? You mean pres? They tell you about the clips, all the details including what pres they used, etc... - if they sound good on EBay...

Look at their feedback and how many they sold AND they offer 14 days money back. Even if anyone here gives you a "testimonial" there is no guarantee you will like them Sound is subjective to a reasonable degree.

I bought a pair after hearing those sound samples, and I can confirm that they're real and hang well with those more expensive mikes. I compared them directly with AEA R92, and liked Montigomo better. Smoother sound, more LF in a good way, greater detail. For the price of one AEA I could buy 4 of these, so yeah, we sent back AEA to the distributor.
So far I used them on overheads, saxophone, guitar amp, all of these sounds great. We even compared it with U87 on sax, and the player chose Montigomo for the recording. I'm very happy with them, and hearing them few of my friends bought one or two for themselves.
I also found good and inexpensive shockmount for them: the t.bone SSM 6 - Thomann Polska , tested and proven to be effective, also fits well (not too tight, but secure enough)

If you need more reassurance that this mic is a great value, then you should probably pass. Seems to me your worried that its not worth the $200 or your looking for some "guarantee" that you will like it. Not trying to be a jerk but, I would understand it if the mic was $1000.00. Its $200! live a little! I bet you have risked more money on worse things in your life.

And a measurement of this R1a. Some of the samples in he ebay did not impress on me. But guitar amp was pretty OK!
