Hi all

BeesNeez Mics have announced though their facebook site they are making a limited run of vintage U87 clone mics for a special price, using their own handmade K8 capsule. I have just placed myself on the list for one of these clone series mics.

I know the market is fairly saturated with vintage U87 clone mics, but I have several of their mics, including the tribute series and they are highly recommended.

Anyone else signed up for one of these?

Hi All. Yes we have decided to make a truly affordable U87 clone. All made in house in our Australian Factory. It will feature our own Capsule, our own transformer and our own Body.


It is a cardioid only version that is true to the original schematic minus the pattern, pad and Roll off switching.

Price is unbeatable at $500usd (current exchange rate) (AUD760 plus gst for Aussies) plus shipping.

WOW cool news! So is this going for a "shootout grade" emulation of the u87, or just a very similar flavor kinda thing? I've always wondered, what is it about the u87 that costs $3000 anyway???

Definitely shootout grade!

The original U87 is a great mic; well built and instantly recognisable. Is it worth 3k? No Comment! Lol

Quite a difference there. It would be really interesting to see how this could be developed even further, to get the thick sound of the U87, you can really hear it in the quieter parts of the clips and in the esses. A bit more top end in yours as well.

EDIT: Used an hour or so to compare, by cutting the to clips bits to get as close a timing and volume as possible. I must say this is pretty darn close in the mid-range, but the cutoff is a bit steeper in the low end, at 80 Hz and the brightness I heard in the top end seems to be two resonant peaks, that don't exist in the Neumann.

Yes I agree, there are some differences but the Neumann is an AI. The Beesneez is an earlier i version so more musical in the midrange.

Ah, sorry for missing that! It's actually 3dB. This can of course be partly due to the different takes!

on the male vocal I preferred the Neumann, just had the right low end depth, but on your daughter's voice (she has a great voice!) the BN87 was much better. Very cool mic Ben!
