That's sounds about right in my recollection. Again, I think the R101 plays better impedance wise with a larger amount of pres, maybe? Perhaps?
I've only had a handlful of pres in my 22 years of (real) recording; Roland, MOTU, Wunder Audio, API 3124, Avedis, Apogee, LA610, Gas Cooker, and Metric Halo ULN8/2/2882. Roland and MOTU onboard "pres" weren't really preamps, just, eh.... The GasCooker was more a color box. LA610 was a good match but could be noisy, yet I do miss it's color.
The API's, Avedis & Wunder pres are STELLAR and I miss them to this day yet the Apogee & Metric Halo pres are silky and clean with plenty of gain to spare and are QUIET!
I have not tried a AEA or Cloudlifter preamps with variable impedance selectors. Perhaps those are a better match for ribbon mics? Anyone?
