Hi all

So I am really interested in using Geoshred for creating performances on instruments I don't play (like Sitar for example).

Geoshred is amazing but it's Mac only and I know NOTHING about Macs, haven't used one since my early studio days back in the 90's. I am on PC using Reaper and I want to get digital audio out of this iPad Pro into my DAW.

I don't want to use the iPad's DA converter, I would like to get digital auto directly from the iPad with Geoshred into my Windows DAW.... is that possible and if so, how?

I should have probably added that I already have a 2 RME cards in my DAW with ABS/EBU and SPDIF I/O so the more I look into this, the more I think I just need a USB to SPDIF converter of some kind....

Maybe something like this would work I think.

Oh, on the idea I posted above, would that keep the signal all digital or does that type of USB >> SPDIF device just act like another AD converter?

I wouldn't want a DA conversion from the iPad then another DA conversion with that device.... I don't think that's what's going on here but I am not exactly sure.

The signal will remain in the digital domain if you use the s/pdif output to go into an AES input (you will need to set that AES input to consumer level on your RME interface, I had to change that setting on my UFX+).

That box would do the job but I probably wouldn’t choise it, because the specs declare only up to 48 KHz (this may be an issue if you prefer working at higher sample rates) and, most importantly, 16bit (really???).

Any usb audio interface with a s/pdif output will do the job (as long as it’s plug’n’play / works with iOS). A box like the one if your link is a small audio interface, after all…
Then, of course, it depends on your requirements in regards to sound quality. 48Kh 16 bit seems limiting to me, I hope I misread the specs. But from a strictly functional poinr of view, what you linked should do the job.

Yeah, I just saw the 16 bit thing, that's kind of a turnoff.

The part I wasn't sure about was how the iPad would see whatever device I hook up to it as a digital audio output.

The device I listed above (that I am not going to purchase now) has to show up on the iPad as some kind of device and because it appears to be pretty basic, it seems like the iPad would just show up like a pair of headphones or something.
Wouldn't that force the iPad to use it's own DA converter and send an analog output?

I just don't know how the iPad ends up sending digital audio vs. when it sends just analog signals to "dumb" hardware.

Use a usb dongle to an audio interface that connects to your computer however.

With a Mac it’s easier (I use PC)

No, the iPad recognizes the usb peripheral as a usb soundcard and uses it as such (the same as a computer would do); the signal will remain in digital domain as long as you use a digital output like the S/PDIF.


By the way, I was looking at Inject by AudioMovers and I noticed it's 49.99 at the moment. That allows to stream directly to/from any audio device directly into the daw, without having to change the audio driver. It seems iPhone/iPads are useable devices, there's a faq about using them on Mac but nothing about Windows.

I think I'll try the demo later this evening after dinner and report here.

Bad news, Audiomovers Inject doesn't work with the iPad on Windows (the computer is not recognized as an output for the iPad, I was quite afraid this would have been the case), so it's not an otion.

Back to the s/pdif.

The U44 from Zoom is affordable and really good for the price, offers coaxial and optical s/pdif ins and outs. Works great with my IOS devices. Up to 24/96. Special iPad modus, where it uses an optional power source, works as a standalone D/A A/D too.

It was a lot more expensive than I planned on but there are a few bonus features like the ability to route MIDI etc. from other devices and that I can plug the iPad into the second port and it will act as a charger. There is even a headphone out (not that I need it but it's not bad to have an extra headphone send).

Pretty cool little device, as long as it does what it says it does I guess..... I will report back but this seems like a really good solution.

I've been intrigued by this one for awhile now.
Interested in what you think of it once it arrives.
Curious about:
* Do the mic pres, line ins, and DA sound decent without noticable sonic flaws?
* Lowest stable latency achievable?
* Can it do 96K @ 32 buffer reliably?
* Does audio routing between a PC and an iPad work well as advertised?

Look at our FAQ about how to connect the iOS/iPadOS version of GeoShred to a Windows machine. Note that StudioMux is dead at this point. Because Windows does not support direct USB Audio/MIDI your only really choice is a digital interface. The iConnectivity Audio4C is a good choice. This is what I'm using to connect to my PC. I use a Volt 2 wired into my Ferrofish Pulse for the audio and the MIDI from the Volt 2 into my MioXM. CCK into the iPad.
