Can't help it..I think those JBL speaker really look like PA speakers. And also a separate amplifier...jsut as with the Amphions..not my cup of tea.
I'm very curious how you think they compare soundwise. My guess is they will be nr 3 in your shootout. But I have no idea how the JBL's sound..Curious about your findings..

BTW. JBL also offers monitor volume controllers. Oh wait no it is SM-pro audio...? hmm...

They do look bad but they sound good! Had to produce a song, and did not have the chance to mix, but tomorrow will!! and also the two 15 arrive!!!

at least on photo to look a bit non professionel, but I think we must rethink, even the big M2 appears not so attractive, but from what I understand, is a remarkable speaker.

Fascinating indeed! Kii are bafflingly stunning. People would have laughed at you a few years back -or they still do actually- if you claimed a monitor could combine the attributes that the Kii's do - I mean:
dimensions of 20x40x40cm, 8"x16"x16" (WxHxD) with a frequency response of 20Hz...25kHz +/- 0.5dB..! Not to mention the Godsend of controlled Directivity...

Amphions are one of my favorite montiors to mix on. Relaxed, very detailed and neutral. With that being said, they are not my favorite monitors for playback. They lack the enjoyment of many other monitors because their not meant for enjoyment. They are meant for letting you hear your mixes accurately. If I had the Amphions, I would need a 2nd pair of monitors for playback like Dynaudio or Adam

The Genelec 8351 are amazing monitors and I would love to have them in my stuido. They would be a step up from the Twins, but then again so would the Focal Trio's.

Interesting. Obviously horses for courses as for me there are no Dynaudios nor Adams I have heard (and I have used many) that I would rather listen to than Amphions. Dynaudios are all a bit 'soapy' except M2's and Adams usually make me feel uncomfortable.

We just listened to the Amphion Two18's and Genelec 8351's. Genelec were tuned via DSP. Let me tell you that the Amphions have some amazing midrange detail and the soundstage/image is rather impressive. And this is without tuning them at all!! I have owned the 8351's for over a year, and just purchased 2 sets of Amphions. We tested them in our control room and listening office just to see how they sounded. Amphion gave great results in both.

I can't tell you how impressed I am with the Amphion two 18.

I tested a lot of monitors and a big thing I really found was this weird disconnected phase relationship between drivers that most nearfield monitors seem to exhibit, especially noticable when you switch from lots of monitors to A/B. This effect is really obvious if you switch from NS10s for example to most nearfields, but it is imperceptible on these!

My favourite speakers for a long time have been the ATC scm25 and these Amphions blew them out of the park for me, much tighter bottom end that feels pure and this wonderful open high end that makes you feel like you are looking into a mix.

They really feel like extended NS10s that are pleasant to listen to, and by that I mean I can trust them and I know if it sounds great on them then it will translate well. I do feel like I benefit from using a sub with them just to get a really solid picture of the bottom octave, but i switch this in and out.

I've been taking them around to big studios for tracking and mixing sessions, again A/B testing them with the house speakers and i'm still so satisfied I made the best purchase I've ever made.


A big revelation for me was the speaker cable comparison I did between lots of other high and low end cables vs the Amphion cables - you really can hear the difference! I presume this is because of varying capacitance and these cables being part of the 'voicing' of these speakers due to correct impedance loading etc but boy I thought I wouldn't hear the difference between these and coat hangers Very interesting! Things I noticed were mostly subjective - like the top end 'opening up', 'width' and the bottom end tightening up etc, but also tonal shaping like more bottom with some cables etc.

if you haven't heard them - go do it. You'll end up buying them though...

Man I am seriously considering the Amphion one18. I have been using the the Genelec 8351 with GLM for about 6 months now and really struggling with translation.
I have a fairly small room (4x3x2.4m) but with lots of acoustic treatment and my mixes always come out boomy, I pretty much mix entirely on my avontone mixcubes and do detailed eq'ing on my Audeze headphones while my $10kAUD 8351's just sit there tuned off and have much better results, they sound amazing but I don't have clients to impress.

Wish I could try before I buy damnit.

Could you post some of the GLM measurements, because I believe something must be really wrong in your case?. If other commercial mixes sound great, how come you are not able for your mixes come out this way? Obviously you are having issues in the 100Hz - 150Hz range, which appears like a room or positioning related issue.

I am using them for more than 2 years without any issues regarding translation.

i hear you. When i bought my one 15's i sold the avantones... no need to use headphones either. However let me warn you that in a room your size you should consider one 15's instead of one 18 specially if the space you got behind the speaker to the wall and between speakers themselves and you is less than 1 meter....


you will miss lowend but if you work it right and make the music bang without the speaker farting, it will work elsewhere. It's the first time i hear my mixes on home or car stereos, even laptops and cellphones and don't want to kill myself... sometimes it actually improves... hahaha

it's not magic though, i had to still learn them on the de-essing and hi hats and tambourine, but now is all good...

My room is also solid brick which is really unfortunate. I have pretty serious bass trapping in the corners and first reflection points. My speakers are placed about 0.3m of the front wall which is also a window.

Thanks for the heads up Hansest. After my first post and some deep forum diving I am considering the one15's. I don't think I'd ever get rid of the mixcubes and thought the one18's would compliment them well but I'd be very afraid of ending up in the same situation with the 8351's with too much bass in a small room. I'm only mixing and not mastering and there is only so much acoustic treatment one can fit in such a small room.

Thank you very much about your GLM pictures. It totally explains the issue with boominess you are experiencing with your mixes. You have severe dips in the 100Hz area (20dB dips that are very wide), you are basically not able to hear the weight and punch of bass and kock drums where they are the most obvious. Would you have any chance to move your listening position in the room or try to position the speakers even closer to the wall? I think it is more of a room mode issue in your listening position, that will be unable to be solved even with additional trapping, but I'm positive tou could decrease the dips for more than 10dB. You will not have much luck even with other speakers, because that is a physics related issue. I understand Mixcubes help you here, because they roll off much higher. With Genelecs you try to boost tje kicks and bass in this prpblematic area, to get more impact and to suit your liking, but your mixes end up boomy, because you are not heering that frequency band in your room. The only way you could combat this in your current position is with a clever positioning of subwoofer. Other speakers in the same spot won't help you at all.

I have moved the speakers around and it made it worse, I have actually decreased that dip with more bass traps (thats an old measurement sorry) but it's still very much there and my room is getting full. So that leads me to think i really need to change monitors otherwise im fighting an uphill battle.

I've got pretty good at balancing the sub in my Audeze's and if I get the one15, cable and amp for $5KAUD and sell the 8351's for $10kAUD thats some sweet pocket money.

Oh, thank you for the picture of the room, yes it is obvious that due to the geometry constraints you will of course have real problems with speaker positioning and therefore low end. Some bass trapping might have helped, but due to the severity of the dips (in width and depth) probably not much. They are probably too much of a speaker for your current room, yes, which might get flooded by the bass output and this might relatively cause percieved missing low end in the 80-100Hz area even more problematic in the end. One15 will not be able to produce even remotely comparable low end, therefore might appear better in your situation, but you will still need to largely depend on your Audeeze headphones for sorting out your low end.

I noticed you're selling a pair of one15's Jantex, would love to hear about your experience with them and why they didn't work out for you.

I simply didn't like them much and only rarely used them next to Genelecs. In Genelecs for me provide much better translation, detail, soundstage and separation. There is no guess work for me with Genelecs, while with Amphions everything sounds pretty good to begin with. In the end I put my old trusty NS10s back to their place, which sound to me more natural, tighter and punchier.

to each his own, i come from using Ns10 for more than 10 years, and the one 15 sounds in a whole different -better universe than the NS´s. Also completely opposite experience with my ears and my room, with the 8351 sounding more forgiving and at the same time pointing me to work stuff that did not result in much improvement in the outside while making me miss stuff that resulted in mixes sounding less polished. To be fair, all mixes where client and mastering engineer approved and where published, but we all liked better the amphion mixes... of course, we all have different ears...

as Jantex said, the one 15´s produce little bass information, but i differ a lot that you would rely a lot in cans for working the subs... not true in my case. I have a Rythmik sub that stays in bypass 95% of the time, if i make the mix work in the one 15´s in a way that i can turn the volume loud and they don´t complain, the sub info works great elsewhere, so to me, they provide more than enough information to mix, and the results translate, and they interact really nice with my room

Here's my first ever product review

I have been using Genelec 1031a for about 20 years. When I mix I like to have NS10 next to them. I recently stressed one of the 1031a's. As it was out for repair I demo'd some new speakers: PMC two two 8, ATC 25 and Amphion two18 (with their Amp500). I did not want to like the Amphion. Ive grown custom to having an integrated speaker that I can travel if needed. On a superficial level, I don't care for their department store home theater looks. I have some trusted friends that really love the ATC25 and so I was excited to try them and was feeling a little biased towards liking them. To make this short, the Amphion speakers are incredible! So fast and tight. The imaging is incredible. I feel like it such a non fatiguing and honest speaker. So far my mixes seem to translate well and the learning curve was instant. Also, I find I don't have to crank them to "feel" the speaker. I LOVE these things. I do wish they filled my control room a bit more when I want to crank them or track lead guitar in the control room. I am about to try their sub and see how that goes but Ive never been a sub guy. I highly suggest checking these speakers out especially if you are an NS10 vet.

Over two months has past, I demoed the one15's and the one18's, on the first day of demoing the amphions I put my Genelec 8351's up for sale. I really wanted the Amphion one18's but the one15's are much better suited to my smaller room and I'm glad I did. The bass is tight and the transition is the best I've ever experienced, I just thought I really sucked at mixing. I haven't touched my mixcubes since using the one15's, I haven't had to with its translation. I make hiphop and a lot of it's in C#0 and haven't had problems placing the sub.

Just to clarify the Genelec 8351's definitely don't suck, they're amazing they were just the wrong speaker for my room, I wish my retailer asked me about before selling them to me which is why I really love Amphions, from Anssi himself replying to my emails to the distributor to the local retailer all very interested in me getting the right speakers for my room. Very happy customer.

I had all the Amphion line in my studio and bought two pairs of One15 to put them besides 8351 and 8260. Both pairs of Amphions got sold after half a year. I am happy to hear that they work for you, but for me they did nothing to be honest.

You've stated 100 times over on GS that Amphion's do not suit your ears. This is ok because we all hear differently.

And on the flip side, I have stated a few times here that I do not like the Genelecs compared to the Amphions.

I find the Amphions to be far more conducive to quick, efficient decision making while mixing and mastering.

The 8351's are great speakers, but do not indicate what needs to be done nearly as well as the Amphions IMO.

Being a good mixer is a being an efficient mixer who can keep the flow going without getting stuck on aspects that are trivial to translation, and this is usually the first thing people notice after a few mixes with the Amphions.

What a relief when you can say "I can finally stop second guessing what people will hear in my work!"

And you have stated 100 times how much they suite you. I found my work trabslating far worse and requiring more revisions. With Genelecs is "what I hear is what I get". With Amphions my mixes didn't sound finished in the real world. They didn't portray dynamics abd everything turned too mushy and compressed outside of the studio.

I think it would be prudent for everyone to post samples of their work ... it would certainly make the whole translation issue easier to judge

I just heard some Genelec 8260's at a studio today and I was shocked at how little usable information they conveyed. They seemed extremely similar to smaller genelecs I've heard over the years. I know people make great mixes on newer genelecs which is why I was excited to hear the 8260's but I just can't understand why they would be desirable to anyone. I can totally understand why Amphions aren't for everyone and if you can get great mixes on what you have, then you should use it. But whatever I heard on the 8260's just didn't seem like a reasonable option. I feel like I understand the appeal of most brands, but I'm at a loss here.

As we said. We all hear differently. On this I'have to agree with mpr. I kept amphion and returned 8351. That was an easy one for me. Not quite the jbl 708 which i found much superior to 8351

If someone is claiming that monitors work amazingly for them, and that their mixes translate perfectly don't you think that most people would agree their mixes sound great on a variety of systems?

On the other hand - if someone thinks their mixes sound amazing, but the majority of people think their mixes sound like $hit, well maybe their opinion isn't very valid on what a great mixing monitor is...wouldn't you agree?
