been tracking some drums here in my room this week.

kit is a 50's slingerland i've had since i was a kid, but i just rehabbed it because i'm going to be gifting it to a good friend. i recut the bearing edges, packed all the lugs with felt, added modern mounting hardware and new hoops and tension rods. sounds incredible.

my room here is the entire lower level of my house, it's only got 9ft ceilings but it's a huge space about 70ft long by 22ft wide at many spots. i have it pretty deadened down with a lot of panels and some diffusion. i still get a little weird resonance in the lower mids i need to work out, but overall the room sounds pretty good for not being a proper studio room.

i'm currently in my use as few mics as possible era. for this i used 5 mics. trying to get a natural but still big sound that will fit in a modern rock production. lots of low end, which this almost 70 year old slingerland kick really puts out.

slingerland radio king 50's drums, 22/13/16 with a modern gretsch bell brass. aquarian vintage heads on botoms, classic coated on tops, muffled with these new tandem drum muffling things which are pretty great. kick has a memory foam pillow inside. paiste masters crash and ride, old paiste standard hi hats from the 70s

kick drum had a bock u195 FET on the front head going into CAPI VP25

snare was an sm7 into CAPI VP26

overheads which were sort of out front of the kit was AEA R88 stereo ribbon into a pair of chandler TG2 preamps

i also had my stager SR1a large ribbon sort of down between the front of bass drum and floor tom under the ride.

the stager was going into a CAPI VP25 as well and that combo is what is getting most of the sub low end. the stager has so much tight, useable low end it's wild..and the CAPI VP25's seem to go down lower than the other CAPI modules i have.

this is tracked into LUNA via a blackface Apollo 16.

this little rough mix of the drums has just a little hi pass eq on the overheads, some compression from UAD FATSO on the submix of the drums and then limiting and a little top end and pulling out some lower mids on the UAD Manley massive passive, i also sent a little of the snare and overhead/front mic to UAD ocean way room plugin for a little ambience.

i've been wanting to grab a few of those periscope mics but they never show them in stock anymore. hoping they are still making them.

Kinda late answer lol. But here's something I recorded with this setup lately. The XR627 were on snare top bottom and on the glyn-johns ispired overhead setup. Lightly mixed not heavily. Toms TLA M3 tubetracker, bassdrum mics XR621, room rme ufx+ pres.

This was a series of cymbal video advertisements and sound demos for the new cymbal brand, Sihi. I handled the entire production, including recording, video production, editing, and performance.

Wasn't aware of that. They are really outstanding mics, not only for recording drums. For the new Dr. Krapula record I used it on vocals, too. I built an array of a 47fet, a 441 and a Periscope and recorded all three. We got the blend we wanted for each track and whenever we wanted more spit and character, the Periscope was essential for the blend.

yeah they just show out of stock. i need to reach out to them and see if they will start making them again. i was going to order a few last year and just never got around to it.

i like the idea of another character mic i can throw up and not need a compressor to tweak it.

the demos ive heard sound like what i often do to a random mic anyways with a limiter while tracking.

Don't underestimate the unique character they have. The slam and low end they have built in isn't easy to replicate. It's predictable und completely unpredictable at the same time. ;-)

tracking this week at my private studio

kit is a craviotto solid cherry 20, 12, 14. coated evans heads top and bottom.

bass drum wide open nothing inside, solid front head. toms have a little muffling from a snare weight and these awesome dampeners from a company called tandem drums.

cymbals are paiste masters thin crash ride, a 2002 big beat crash ride and a pair of 16" paiste standard ludwigs for hats.

snares are craviotto 6x14 solid maple, 5x14 pewter and my keplinger 7x14 so far.

using very few mics, printing more than i'll probably use on this project.

kick has an EV ND68 pointed at the front bass drum head going into a CAPI VP25 and a little labs VOG

snare is an shure SM7 into a CAPI VP26 with an SPL transient designer and API 550 eq

overheads are AEA R88 stereo ribbon into chandler TG2 preamp and an audioscape DCOMP

i have clip on sennheisser 602 mics on each tom going into shadow hills gamma preamps on the nickel setting

a stager SR1a large ribbon as an over all kit mic that is placed. low next to the kick drum pointed up at snare between the floor tom and rack tom. that is going into a capi VP25

and about 15ft out in the room in my hall between my stairway and bathroom, a single aston origin mic in figure 8 going into a CAPI VP26 and my spectrasonics 610 for a room/ambient tone.

recorded to LUNA with Apollo interfaces.

so far, just the R88 overheads with a little of the stager compressed blended in is working with the basic tracking. printing snare, kick and toms close mics just in case i need more punch or attack once we build these songs out more.

i'm down to a vintage rogers, vintage slingerland and 70s gretsch plus this craviotto and a few random other kicks. have sold all my other stuff or have them parked at friend's studios as their house kits.

i don't have as much space here as my last studio so trying to narrow down gear to just a few kits and snares.

still working on letting go of snares.

That's still a great collection. I got to hang out with Jimmy Chamberlain before his first gig on a set of Beech Cravs and those sounded amazing.

I yet have to try an SM7 on snare. Was about to do it on a session last week, but the old EV I normally use just sounded so damn good again.

matt cameron also has a craviotto. it's funny how many big dudes who endorse and love other drums also have craviottos in their arsenal.

i'm probably going to sell some vintage gretsch stuff that i have doubles of. i have a 5x14 aluminum and a few round badges 8 lug wood drums. i will have at least one ayotte. probably the 7x13 with steel hoops and i might end up selling my ayotte keplinger 7x13 as it's just not getting used as much as my other keplingers.

there will be a WFL III 6x14 maple and a few others. i have so much stuff and trying to narrow it down to just the stuff i'm using a lot.

i'll message you a list when i figure it all out in the coming weeks. i just got one of my road cases back and going through stuff in there. i had so much gear parked at friend's studios since i've been sick. finally getting a lot of it back and remembering all of what i have.

i'll try to put up some recordings later this week when i can sit down and play. i've got two other drummers playing it this week on tracks. i don't want to post their stuff until the projects are done.

i'll sit down and play a little bit with this setup and post some clips later.

at one point i had 5 sm7s so i would use them to mic a whole kit and found that i actually really liked them on snare and hat and even in the kick drum when i had an ns10 woofer or fet 47 type on the front head.

i still end up setting up my sm7s for scratch vocals and talkbacks so often they end up being the best room mic on the session that gets squashed and blended back in the drum mix.

i'll spend all this time placing my actual room mics perfectly and then half the time the random sm7 i pull up that i printed while recording drums ends up sounding so cool.

which EV mic are you using ? i just recently rediscovered my old nd 408 and nd68 mics. i had the nd68 on a may mount in one of my live kits for decades because it just worked, but i've been using it to record lately and it's cool.

i just realized that the EV mic i have is the ND 868, not ND68. i guess the ND68 is a newer version.

i've had this thing for ages, at least since the 90s. i had 3 ND408s on my toms back then and the ND868 for bass drum, all with the may internal mic system deal in my drums.

Yeah, I dig SM7's a lot, for many things, for some reason I just never tried them on drums. Will do, we have 5, too.

The EV I use is a DS35. Those grey ones with a super thin body. Easy to place, great rejection and they sound incredible on snare, guitar amps and a lot of things.

relatively small, and very dry room, but sounds KILLER. i also track guitars in here (seen behind the kit)

started a new record this last few days with a great band. we tracked live with keys, bass, drums.

drums were a barton kit which sounded a lot like my old recording custom yamahas and some paiste signature cymbals.

kick inside was telefunken m82 into a RND shelford preamp with a lot of the blue silk engaged.

kick outside was a bock u195FET into warm audio 512 and a little labs VOG

snare top was beyer m201 into RND shelford preamp with red silk at about 50% then to a SPL transient designer.

snare bottom was soyuz 013 into warm audio 512 and tree audio limiter

rack and floor toms had a 421 on top and a 57 on bottom combined with a basic Y cable with the cable for the 57 phase reversed. preamps were RND 5211

overhead was AEA R88 stereo ribbon over the top of the kit into a RND 5211 preamp and RND eq and compressor

close hat and ride had beyer m160 ribbons into sytek preamps.

stereo room was a pair of ear trumpet labs edwina condensors into sytek preamps and audioscape D comp limiter

mono kit was a FLEA 47 tube mic into warm audio 512 and UA 1176 limiter

i had a coles 4038 sort of over the kick pointed down at snare between the toms. it was going into a warm audio 512 preamp and then to the other side of the UA 1176 limiter

far room one was neumann u89 into shadow hills gamma then into UA 1176

far room two was facing the brick wall. AEA R84 ribbon into shadow hills gama.

finally i had a stager SR1a large ribbon lined up with the FLEA but pretty low to the ground directly in front of the bass drum. that went into a chandler germanium preamp and a transient designer as well as a little labs IBP.

the studio had a pair of the RND tape emulators so i printed a submix of my drum mix thru them back into protools to have to blend in later.

might have to find a pair of them they do something really cool to the low end and top end of a drum submix.

keys were direct into telefunken direct box and warm audio 73 preamps.

bass was DI into BAE and RND direct boxes, one from the bass, one from the effects pedals. preamps were burl B1.

can't post any audio yet but maybe can grab a little drum mix and put up soon.

been out of comission but this is a good excuse to say I still love this thread : )

Working on some pop rock stuff, havin fun with parallel compression sends on the way in from the big desk at the studio (soundtracs cm4400). Also doing the Albini omni mics on the floor thing for the first time in this room, with great success. I think this might be go-to room mic move from now on

Hello all, poor health means I haven’t been around for a while. Started easing back in last month and just finished a ten day session, here’s the drum set up we ended up with: kit was a comp of our two Yamaha Recording customs plus the floor tom from our DW. Snare was a Ludwig 402.

FET47 on outside kick, 201 on snare top, 57 on snare bottom, Mikteks on toms, Royer SF12 on overheads, Coles 4038 on close room and M49 on far room.
