I could buy a Microtech Gefell UMT 70 S large diapharm condenser microfone for 300 dollars. Does anyone know this mic? As soon as possible I´m going for a few tests with it. Would it be worth the money?

I might be able to buy a used UMT 70 s for about 600$. It's double the price Hedgehog would pay for his, but it is still cheap for a used UMT 70 s?

Considering they're $1400 new, I would say yes. Just got mine last week, it's been great so far.

You don't say what you are going to use it for!

Mics are very personal pieces of equipment, at the price you mention ($600), you are right in the range of a used AKG C414B-ULS, a new Audio Technica 3060/or discounted 4050, new Rode NT2000, new CAD M9. The UMT 70S is quite a "toppy" mic, a very clear sound, but it wouldn't be my first choice for an "earthy" or rock vocalist. I think a used AKG C414 is the best "all round workhorse" mic of the above listed, but I've heard good results on vocals from the CADs. The AT 4050 is probably less cold sounding than the UMT, but the UMT would give a really "upmarket" quality sound on an acoustic guitar, vibraphone, marimba ... maybe make a dull 'ol Yamaha baby grand piano really shine.

I would try and check it out on your chosen instrument alongside some other mics.

I've been given the opportunity to borrow the UMT and to give it a try. Yesterday we (I and my colleauge) compared it to a Shure KSM44, on a male singer. Honestly, we couldn't really tell any great sonic difference. Perhaps the UMT sounded a bit more round in the mid.
We used the micpre's in a RME Fireface. Would have been nice to run it through to a tube micpre, hopefully the UMT would have showed us it's real capacities. But a tube micpre is still on our list-of-gear-to-get...

There is a mark of impact on the top of the UMT. Seems to have been dropped to the floor... The mic doesn't yield any crackles, but might the incidental dropping have caused any damage on the membrane (which would not be immediately noticeable)? Any thoughts?

Oh, and if I get it, it will probably be used for guitar amps and acoustic guitars. And in every situation where it would sound just right...

I finally bought the Gefell mik, it really sounds great. I recorded a Charvell guitar>5150 Peavy amp>> Marshall cab. Got a pretty cool sound. I recorded it 2x mono, then 2x with a Neumann TLM 103 and 2x SM 57. The Gefell sounds better for me than the TLM, of course it sounds different, but better for me. Probably going to sell the TLM for a U 87.

The Gefell sounds also pretty good on accoustic guitars, I tried it several times.
Next week I´m going to record my voice with it, 9 songs!!


So far, do it like me and buy it!!!!

One of the greatest gtr. amp recording combos ever: 1 Gefell 70 and 1 Royer 121 on the same speaker. Adjust for phase coherence and mix to your liking (I prefer the MG about 5 dB lower than the Royer)

i guess you guys are talking about low to medium volume amps/sounds? i don´t think my gefells could stand the pressure of lets say a cranked marshall. or is there a trick?

Last time it was in front of a 300-Watt Randall "Dimebag" amp feeding a Marshall 4x12".
Not running full blast, but you couldn't speak next to it.
I may have had the 10dB PAD in, but that was it.
