Looking for a new analog noticeable ''betterizer'' unit - Page 2

I want to buy the Burl B2 ADC.

But for the Unfairchild, and the Shadow Hills, I will leave that to the mastering studio.Too expensive for me right now.

Now for the Bettermaker limiter, I am still looking for some reviews of it, to see if it is really efficient, because there already are so many good quality plugins for limiting:Is it really worth then investing in a hardware unit like the Bettermaker ?

Doesn’t the bettermaker also belong in the mastering studio with the other 2bus compressors?

Oh dude I was just trolling, I do everything itb and only record vocals and Guitar and yeah I like the Burl but it's not the most important piece to get.

To me it's the song and how talented the artist is, and how talented the producer is. No piece of gear can give you talent or experience. Give me a computer and a few plugins and I'll make it work. I never understood how a piece of gear can give you a vibe. For example, 2 people could sing/play into a 1073 and 1 will have vibe and soul in the performance and the other won't, but it's the same mic into the same preamp. I think the source and the producers direction will make or break anything right off the bat.

I understand you.
But there are some pieces of analog equipment you can't beat! For example a Thermionic Phoenix! You will never get the same vibe ITB.
Those are those pieces I am looking for.
The Silver Bullet is also amazing.
That's the kind of analog unit with that special I am looking for, and why I created this post.

I would say just get some vintage transformers, or just inserring Cinemag ones works pretty well. For 70's old school rock vive, I also would recommend Compex F760X (vintage only) even without original internal transformers. For 80's and 90's, SSL bus comp, hands down.

I agree that it brings in a vibe but if the song isn't very good, I don't think a hardware device will make or break a song from getting heard or not heard.

Whereas that's your intent is different though, maybe you want stuff to sound a certain way, even if people listen to it or not, but I always keep in mind that (to me) there's no point in getting this or that piece of hardware just so your family and mom and dad listen to it and smile and no one else hears it.

At least 90% of the stuff made by people on this board is not heard by more than a handful.

Is profit the goal of most of the artists in these parts or fun or realizing a vision?

100% of the music made these days isn’t as good as someone like Stravinsky or as profitable as just about any successful commercial products.

Does that mean we should not make music?

I don’t know the answer to these questions.

Why, is there something off with the new ones? I heard Michael Brauer say for his $$$...it sounded a little brighter, but pretty much the same as a vintage unit.

imo the op is trapped into a system of believe (that magic comes from gear and specifically analog gear) but since i fear my exorcisms will not fall on fertile ground, i try a paradoxical intervention...

(look it up in a dictionary if you are not familiar with psychodynamic procedures and processes)

...and suggest a remedy for auditory phantom pain (besides maybe homeopathy) in the form of a device that does nothing and everything at the same time:

Work on the front end to get a better back end. Better mics, cables and conversion is a start.

Decent performers in front of the mic usually helps as well.

@ sergioelectro curious how you find the Phoenix compared to the silver bullet in terms of box tone and “betterizing”.. Very different topologies, I know, but I’ve had a strong interest in both. Any comments about this? Also for particular genres?

Both are very good.
But I will take for the first step the Silver Bullet as it is a preamp.

I have a Tegeler VariTube Comp and I have not a single plugin that I, ME, can get to do what that comp does. I use it on bass and other low endy sounds. Seems to sink them down in the mix yet make the sound very audible in the lower octaves and adds some serious harmonics.

Hello,

Anyone is using the Looptrotter Monster Compressor ?
Heard some video clips on their website. It sounds very good.
But I also already have a tube stereo compressor, The Thermionic Phoenix mastering compressor.
Will it be overkilled, or different sounding beasts ?
