Here attached two takes, recorded one week apart, with a Brauner Valvet pair and a Neumann M149 pair. All other factors identical: same grand piano, same room, same amateur pianist, same mic placement, small AB just beside the tail end, 1.6 m above the floor, cardio setting, Fearn VT2 and Fireface400.
Which sound do you prefer ? Try not to involve the playing differences...
I'll send the key by PM.
But I dont like this microphone on piano, to me it sounds much too round on piano. I like a cleaner sound for piano recordings. M149 is great for voice.
The Brauner to me is better for this purpose but also not optimal - it would have been better in a better room.
Both do sound quite nice, and not all that different from each other.
I also think that 1 is the Brauner and 2 is the Neumann, but I'll buck the trend here and say that I preferred 1. I found it to be slightly clearer and more articulate.
I like #1 more than #2. It feels deeper and the mids are more expressive to me. #2 sounds a bit boring to me, also a bit nasal.
Curious to know which one is which, as I am looking for a good mic pair to record piano and drum rooms.
Best,
Tommy
I think for my part that the second one is a little rounder. The first has extra top-end which I don't really dig, but I'm guessing it could be eq'd out.
For a totally subjective statement from me, I'd say mic 2 sounds like what I'd expect from a nice ambiant piano recording, just a tiiiny bit blurry to add with the dimmed lighting, the wine, and... ok i'll stop now heh
other than the differences in overall volume, I feel that #2 feels more flat yet has a more low-mid response. However, I prefer #1 for being much more colorful and lush of a tone. I am guessing Brauner is #1.

Oh.
I like both!
I almost don't wanna guess, incase I shoot myself in the foot. However, after listening to the samples I Prefer 1.
1. More classy sound, warm and detailed, Lots of Character. YEA! WOW!
2. Brighter (not in a bad way though)
Looking forward to the KEY, if you have time. Thanks for your post.
Hello didier once again thank you for posting a great comparison of microphones. As a follower of your previous microphone comparison threads ,I can guess that because of Brauner Valvet translating the mids very well right to the face with a balanced character of warm and clear tones ,2 nd one is the Valvet.
didier - thanks for posting more tests. i really enjoyed the test of the three pairs of SDC omnis you did (i felt like the omni SDCs all sounded better than the 6 pairs of SDC cards you tested). i was wondering how you felt the LDC tests compared to the SDC omnis you tried.
James, actually I prefer in general the LDCs for recording piano at home. I think at a short distance between the mics and the piano, as imposed by the small room, a LDC sounds better. I guess that a SDC is better beyond 1 meter or so, which is larger than what I'am used to. However the miniature microphones like DPA 4060, when used inside the piano are an interesting alternative because of the negligible impact of the room acoustics, which are generally rather bad at home when compared to a room suited to public performance.
I tested the DPA 4041, which is a true pressure (= omni) LD microphone. It's wonderful. (But very expensive...)
I prefer one, I would say it's the Brauner as well. I have heard M149's before and the bottom is impressive when first heard, I think it takes away from the detail of the instrument.
