On your synth LCD screen press the button below the gear icon, then press the number that corresponds to Network and you'll see an IP Address. Type the IP address on your web browser to open up the editor.

Ah, I see. Does that mean the Modal's ethernet needs to be hooked up in order to control it via the editor?

Correct, your synth must be connected to the net in order for the editor to function. I haven't used it that much lately but every time I use it I learn more. It's quite an effective tool for editing the parameters of the Modal synths.

Did you ever pick up the StageBug? If so, how has it been working for you?

I did but never got around to hooking it up since I had to pack up studio for a remodel. I imagine it should work fine other than levels being slightly variable between stereo and mono patches.

I'm interested in a Modal 001. I've read the manual and all sounds well, but there is no information on the cloud part.

What does the cloud element bring?

Also, other than the video above on the web based browser editor, is there any more information on what it does? I like to have an editor for parts that are simply easier done there than on the hardware so i'm pretty interested in that, especially since I have an iPad docked right next to where it's put a Modal 001.

The cloud is basically a place to download patches, perform OS updates, and to connect your synth to the editor. Whatever the editor can do, can just as easily be done on the synth. Assigning modulations is pretty straightforward and involves hardly any menu diving at all. The one advantage of the editor however, is the ability to generate patches at the press of a button. These are a great starting point and can be used to further customize your new patch.

I'm not sure about the 001, but the 002 has a 10,000 patch storage capacity. 001 should come close to that if not the same.

What is the randomiser like? Is it totally random, or is there any control, like on the Virus, or intelligence, like on the Nord Lead 4/A1?

From what I can remember, it was totally random and I tweaked the sounds to my liking and stored them as working patches. I haven't spent a whole lot of time on the Virus editor to make a good comparison between the two. What I really find helpful, is using the editor to manage the Sequencer and the Animator. It's much faster than routing the modulations by hand.

Fair enough. The Virus allows you to set randomisation strength and how many parameters will be randomised.

I find complete randomisers to be pretty much useless.

I don't recall the Modal editor as having that feature.

I tried a couple of these yesterday at Synthfest in Sheffield. They sound incredible. Paul was a lovely guy, chatted with him for ages. I didn't have the heart to tell him they were way out of my price range.

I also had the pleasure of spending some time at the Modal stand at Synthfest in Sheffield. Wanted to try the 002 in particular and was really impressed.

I met Paul Maddox and he initially took me through things including the new digi and fx board before I spent some time on my own with headphones going through presets and delving into what the synth could do. I was taken aback by the clarity and the sheer depth of this synth. I had been waiting for the new digi board to sort out the panning issues that I had read about on this forum and I am pleased to report that I could not notice any panning issues. Furthermore the fx board adds a lot of additional sonic possibilities and really adds the gloss and polish to those sounds. Paul explained that controlling the fx as part of the animator/sequencer will be the next area of development.

For those interested the digi/fx board is now shipping for about £500 on top of the price of the synth. The 002 also features new black end cheeks as standard as I understand there had been some complaints about the use of leather!! I thought the black end cheeks looked really cool.

After all that I ended up buying a new 002 with digi/fx board fitted and with the new black end cheeks from Toys4noise for a really great price. Should be arriving late this week. Time to start clearing some space......
