I've got one coming this week, and I don't see this synth discussed much. Also surprised by how few demos there are on Youtube.

I was going to get a Sub 37, but then Sweetwater got a demo unit of the 001 and I ended up getting that, because I think it will fit in with the kind of music I like to make more than the Sub 37 will, and it's still basically a mono (albeit, one that can be truly duophonic and bitimbral), and still somewhat compact.

Anyhow, who here has one? Anything special I should know?

I believe you'll be quite pleased. I was also surprised by the lack of demos on YouTube. I've only done a couple of unboxing vids but hope to do some demos in the future after I figure out how to get the recording to sound it's best on YouTube.

From what I've heard, I LOVE the way it sounds. So clean, bright, and Hi-Fi.

How are you using it mostly? Using the sequencer? Bitimbral mode at al?

I've heard some people complain about the way the LFOs are set up...any issues there? What about the mod matrix?

I also love joysticks. How is the joystick on this? Does it feel good and responsive, and well made?

Interested to hear more from 001 owners. I'll be grabbing an analogue mono soon, and am undecided on this or a Voyager.

Well, I have the 002 and it's built on the same engine. I use mine in every way possible. It's great fun to experiment while having the sequencer and animator running and tweaking all the knobs and coming up with all kinds of interesting sounds. Recently I created a very realistic patch that sounds exactly like a modern telephone ringing. I was pretty impressed that I could tweeze that sound out of the Modal.

The mod matrix is a joy to work with as the LCD screen shows you exactly what you're doing in real time. The joystick is excellent, the pressure is just right and there are lots of assignment possibilities. The synth is extremely well made. You won't be disappointed. Hook it up to some FX and let the magic begin.

It really did. Even in the brief Sonicstate presentation, the Modal guys said it had been out for a couple of weeks after Nick asked when it was going to be released!

I think they announced and put out too many things, too close together. They never really gave a chance for each of their synths to have a few moments to themselves to shine.

That leads to what is my biggest fear of getting this instrument - the company going out of business and being stuck with something that is basically a dead product. I have faith that Moog, DSI, Korg, etc., will be around for a few years. Modal, I'm not sure about.

I have confidence in Modal Electronics. They have solid high quality products and I believe they have made a stake in the synth market.

I ordered my 002 yesterday - great sounding synth I'm sure the 001 will be fabulous.

Have you had any run ins with their customer service? Any issues?

It may seem like a silly reason, but I really wanted something unique in a synth, something that a lot of people don't have or use. This, in addition to the sound and features, is why I chose the 001 over the Sub 37. I've talked to a few synthheads since ordering the 001, and none of them have even heard of the synth or the company.

I have an 002, it's definitely distinctive. Alternatives to the 001 if you want something powerful and unique would be the Pro 02 or Dominion 1

Not at all. In fact the customer service is superior over any other manufacturer that I have ever dealt with. All my e-mails have either been replied to on the same day or the next. All questions are replied to with thorough explanations and you are treated like a VIP every time.

Modal customer support has been great so far. The OS has had teething problems but it seems like it's mostly settling down. I do have concerns that without strong business acumen they may be creators of a great product but without a way to sustain themselves economically. We'll see how that goes though.

I think Pro-02 sounds completely different from other DSI stuff because it uses the discrete LPF and digital oscillators with a ton of modulators...I wouldn't really put it in the same class sonically as their other stuff. It's definitely worth investigating IMO, especially since it's one of the better 'cooked' DSI synths (i.e. it's not a Tempest).

I share your concerns about Modal.

I feel the same about the P12. My favorite synth. Sonically, it sounds like nothing else I've ever heard. I love it's digital heart.

I really like digital oscillators, hence the 001 purchase.

I am a very happy 100% ITB guy, I have barely enough room to swing a cat (I am a animal lover and don't endorse swinging cats) but I think I may find the room for a 001. I like the fact that they a small company making a top quality product that stands out from the crowd.

I would love an 002 but it is bigger and a lot more expensive, the 001 is a far more realistic option. I don't tend to go in for loads of big pads so the 001 multi tracked would probably give me the same end results as an 002 anyway.

Customer support had been great for me - I had a number of question which I needed answered pre my order so top notch, now I'm just waiting for a delivery date on my 002.

have to say i think the Modal synths are on a different level from most these days , i also think feeding cash into a company like this has a lot of merits , the 002 and 08 are on my list and i should have them by 2075

the hard part is why one you buy , i love the ppg digi sound of the 002 . its just really a beautifull sound but the 008 , jesus that thing sounds really nice.I am tempted by the 008 a little more but then i hear the 002 and its like **** i need the 002 ....if they release a sampling keyboard any time soon i am seriously fked.

Starting to get a little worried.

Sent off a few questions on Monday, and haven't heard back yet.

congrats on your new synth, I was oh so close to buying one, my card was literally out and numbers being entered when I pulled back and thought about it and went for something else..the Analog keys. I went to Sounds easy in North Sydney and played the demo model they had there for hrs one day and was sold on it after that but one thing kept coming back about it's tone...it's sooooo vanilla, honestly it almost felt like I was playing a Bass station 2 if I closed my eyes..your mind can play tricks on you though as when you open them and see a beautiful white synth with leather end cheeks it all of a sudden sounded better..

I own one. I've also owned a BSII before. Your opinions on synths don't matter to me if you seriously can't tell the difference in quality between the two synths.
