Oh, lord, have mercy and patience. How do I erase the lousy preset sequences for good with this thing? I thought I deleted them the last time I turned it on, but turned it back on now, and it's all there again. Damn, ****ing annoying.

You need to WRITE blank sequence data to the memory slots.

For the first time I actually decided to try what Korg Volca Bass can do. To test this out I limited myself to using only Volca Bass for the synth sounds. Ableton Live was used for sequencing, recording, mixing and editing. Drums came from Battery. Only Ableton Live's delay and EQ was used on any of the sounds in this song.

Here's the result:

Sample vs Beats ?

Here is a quick volca beats track i made to show the new modifications i found out. Which are: A knockier kickdrum and disco toms.

I picked up a Volca Beats a while back. I wasn't that impressed. Needless to say, I didn't last too long with it as I found the only thing it was good for was making bossa nova beats and its kick drum. Sold it.

Picked up a Volca Keys, and wow, what a difference. That little thing actually has its own sound, its own character. Highly impressed, especially when you consider the price point. A little late to the party, I know, but very glad I could still have a piece of cake. Might have to check out the Volca Bass next.......

Volca Bass is solid, but the Sample is outstanding in my opinion. It's worth a look.

Sample > Keys > Beats > Bass (IMO of course).

Dunno where the FM stands yet, but based on some demos I've heard it's about as good as the Sample.

While it does seem pretty cool, 4 MB of sample time on the Volca Sample is too much of a limitation for my liking. If I don't buy a Volca Bass next, I'm thinking the Volca FM might be worth a test drive.

Oh, and I love the unison ring on the Volca Keys.

Having the Volca Bass for some months now and real liking that beast ,playing threw some outboard thing can sound very vintage .

That's the cool thing about the Volcas. They've got some pretty significant limitations and quirks and so each person is going to get on with them differently. Personally I really like the Bass. It's not a killer bass machine, but it has a rich sound to my ears, an interesting filter with cutoff control that doesn't step like the Keys, a cleaner output than the Keys (since that has to run through the delay), and can achieve some really great timbres by subtly detuning the three oscillators. On the other hand, some would understandably reject it out of hand for lacking the motion sequencing that the other Volcas have, for example.

The Bass is a good lead synth, as well. It's actually my favorite of the original trio.

I played the Volca FM at NAMM. It sounded a lot like a DX100.

Fair enough - everyone has their breaking point. I'll just say that the Volca Sample absolutely screams character and the limited sample time can end up inspiring creative use of the sample manipulation parameters. I actually find the small number of save-able sequences and songs to be more limiting than the sample time.

I've had the Vsample for months but have never really been inspired to use it. It just seems a bit naff to me. I love the Vbass though. Might sell the sample.

So what's the best guess of the next volca after the kick? Snare? Effects box? Personally, I still dream of this one day... Been wishing since day one. Mr. Takahashi, please lol

Volca bass is pretty cool, drums also but not all sounds are good. I made this track with the Bass and Drums and tape echo some time ago

Not a fan of Volcas despite owning a couple, but a Volca Wasp with a conductive keyboard and built-in Spider is a great idea. I've never really managed to replicate the sound on anything else.

Can the Volca Bass do decent lead sounds? I haven't heard/seen anyone on Youtube actually playing the Bass as a lead synth (as opposed to running it through the sequencer). Also how long are the attack and release times for the envelopes?

I bought a used Volca Bass this week. Nice little box. It's a bit limited soundwise but that's part of it's charm. Really like the sequencer with the active steps and that you can record three parts. I recorded this polymetric piece in the vein of Steve Reich with it. Put the Volca bass through some effects and did some post editing.

By the way. I discovered that with some settings of the cutoff and cutoff EG the filter is clipping the sound somehow. It doesn't sound like normal drive but really like some spiky clippings or something. Especially when setting Cutoff beteren 9 and 11 o'clock. Do some others also experience this? Can it be battery dying or is that not possible?

little extra you can use to extract a bit more out of it is to tempo sync the LFO with Func + LFO Rate. then use the amount control to dial in whichever destination is set for choppier effects ie: to cutoff or amp but also works with pitch, all with fairly short decay to hide the fact that it's an LFO, making it more of an extra envelope. (~)

try with both LFO waveforms. gives a staccato play, with a suggestion of slapback delay. you can do this with the Keys as well.

(i still crave a mod for osc sync...)

it can also have Accents in the sequence, if you input Velocity from an external keyboard. does make a significant difference to results.
(for some reason Keys does not record Velocity, but does receive it)
