Get the Slim Phatty and the U-He Diva or Zebra. That will be a killer combo. Right now afaik the Diva is not ported for Pro Tools so if you are running Pro Tools Diva is not an option (although I could be mistake on that) so you would have to go with Zebra (me thinks).

I have a Voyager and I have owned a Moog Source. I have also owned a Virus B and a Virus TI2 Polar, a Roland Super Jupiter, Korg Karma, Waldorf Micro Q, etc. etc.

I will say that there is just nothing quite like owning and playing a real Moog. There is a special something that all Moogs have. They are imminently playable instruments and very expressive instruments.

Sell the Nord rack and get a DSI Tetra or save up for a Prophet. That and the Moog.... whew! SET!

When you think about it, the DSI stuff has almost all the modulation/routing flexibility of the Virus/Nord/etc with the forgiveness and creative feedback of analog. If 4-8 voice polyphony is limiting to you (outside of live performance), then you're doing it wrong (jokes)

Of course, it's totally my opinion, but I really think analog in good hands and leveraged with clever DAW techniques trumps all software/dsp options.

And when it comes to the place where an analog synth falls behind, versatility of oscillators... well do what I do with my DSI Mopho.

Pull up brand X soft synth that has whatever crazy oscillators or sound generation sources that analog can't do (wavetable, granular, deep FM), send it out to the Mopho audio in, disable the Mopho oscillators, then do the rest of the programming on the Mopho.

WHAM! Analog synth with XYZABC123 oscillators.

Ya dig?

the Dave Smith Mopho (used) is an even more affordable option than the Moog. I'm really curious about both.

as said earlier, just explore your Nord more. It can do everything you'll probably ever need. More gear= more distractions = less music made.

You can never have enough gear.

Then, like Royalstone says, explore the Nord. Maybe you can check out some tutorials on youtube that can help you.

I think great software (and virtual analog) can sound really good, but, I can also hear a fairly obvious and distinct difference between it and analog. There's a place for both in your studio. If you like the sound of analog, by all means buy some.

I love the sound of analog and moog filters.

The Leads sound "happier" than other synths to mi ear... and with the right grind effect, the basses couldn't be any more beastly.

Does the SP make your soft synths sound better if you run it through the filters, or does it not make a big difference? If you say yes, and I order one, then find out it doesn't, you have to reimburse me, and I'll hold on to it anyway... Lol! Serious question though, let me know. I have a Virus TI2 and I thought about adding a Minitaur or SP.

I have taken every software sound generator I have and run it through my Mopho at some point, using the Mopho filters and mod to shape the patch... 100% of the time the result was better than the original.

Moog filters are incredible and integrating a SP in the same fashion will only yield great results.

Ya know, I'd actually say I like the Moog filters much better for external sources. Totally a taste thing.

The Mopho is a relatively clean, modern sounding analog. Moog and SE synths are generally... idk, bigger, more classic sounding.

If you're coming from listening to a Nord Lead or Virus, any analog is going to be deeper, fuller, and better for bass/leads. The Moogs have less tweak ability. The best thing about the Mopho/Tetra/Prophet is you have almost all the flexibility and modulation options a Virus has with an analog circuit path. Best of both worlds.

Although a great bass machine, I actually like the Mopho doing lead duties better, it can really scream.

I think you will be very pleased with your decision and setup!

Wanted to chime in to let you know you are not alone in your quest. I went through your same dilemma: I purchased a Virus TI Snow recently hoping it could fulfill ALL duties needed as an external synth.

While it ranges from good to great on most things, I found one of it's weaknesses (to my ears at least) was doing the Moog bass / lead thing (every patch I've tried that had the word 'Moog' in it sounded NOTHING like a Moog to me).

I think you may have been disappointed if you had purchased a TI for bass and leads...IMO THAT is where you really get a lot of bang out of the real analogs.

To illustrate, I submit below a snippet of a piece I was working on (just a doodle). Virus TI is used for the reverb-y lead, the reverb-y pluck pad, and one of the basses. Everything else is Reason (because I couldn't dial in the sounds I heard in my head from the Virus. I am just not happy with the bass and I feel an analog could bring an extra 'something' to the mix -call it weight, grit, whatever...

For my own purposes, I ordered a Studio Electronics SE-1X to compliment the Virus (I found one for 1/3 the price of a Voyager, and I wanted that third OSC....I may still get a Voyager one day....but for now I am hoping the SE will fill the bill and get me close).

Almost scary similarity going on here, I've decided to either get the Virus TI2 Desktop or LP, was even considering posting a thread very similar to this, oh and btw, I'm norwegian too. I've decided to go for the Virus, and then later on perhaps get me a Little Phatty, also its a shame music stores in Norway got pretty much no synths at all so I don't get to try it out before buying.

Slim phatty it is! I can cover everything else with my Virus, Motif XF, Omnisphere, and Reason.

To me it sounds like you're still cutting your teeth and are trying to solve the problems that are rooted in being a crappy engineer and producer by throwing expensive new hardware at it.

If you think Sylenth1 and Zebra 2 do not have the ability to create basses that are "Fat" (whatever the **** this means in this context) then you're just insane.

The problem is not your gear the problem is you.

The virus is not software, nor have i come across software that sounds as good as it, and i own a few vsti's...the slim is limited but the more you use it, the better it gets...but id say the nord is going to cover a lot of ground so id recommend the SP

The virus is instantanious gratification, and that may be its downfall eventually..the prophet has taken an age for me to connect with it...but for the first time my last track had no softsynths, not that i have anything against software, there was just no need for it
