Isn't it strange how an SM7 always works when you have tried all the 'boutique mics' and they just don't work for various reasons on certain vocalists . . . The other night I put a Brauner VM1 on a vocalist, though I was pretty sure it was not the right choice . . . it wasn't. Went to Neumanns, Soundelux . . a couple of others . . knowing the whole time the SM7 was going to be the right choice. Put the SM7 in front of the guy, into an API 512 to LA2 . . done.
I remember reading an interview with Mick Ralphs or Simon Kirke where they said Paul Rogers never used anything but a Shure 58 in the studio during Free and Bad Company days. Hand held . . . completely dry. Did one or two takes . . that was it. Of course he is one of the most amazing rock vocalists of all times but it just shows that whatever works is what works, not the price or the label.
I have a friend that WILL NOT use anything unless it is some boutique item. Turned him on to the RNCs and he wouldn't even give them a listen. I listen to his shit and it sounds so lifeless . . . though it is "perfect". He wouldn't put a $300 mic in front of a vocalist with a shotgun stuck to his head.
Interesting...
I read a post somewhere where they said Paul Rodgers used to use a
'57 and sing in the control room to the monitors.
Whatever way they did it he's definitely in my "top ten" rock vocalists of
all time FWIW. Being one of those singers who sound good on a SM57
it does cause me to question my gearlust for microphones sometimes!
Now I finally understand how some guitarists have tons of guitars.
My understanding is that the SM7 is the smoother sounding kin of the
57 and 58's.
