Sony Bravia Quad beats out Dolby Atmos for CES 2025!

7.1.4 is not a consumer or musician friendly setup, whereas the Quad approach with subwoofer has much more appeal to consumers and small business / studios, ultimately giving more consistent results which actually translate to the home living room listening enjoyment.

Do you agree that the 7.1.4 Dolby atmos approach is the "3D TV" fad being pushed onto the Music industry by Youtube influences when it failed in the consumer home space, even relegated to cheap soundbars and headphone mixes sounding worse than traditional stereo speakers of the 70's?

Should proprietary Atmos "7.1.4" be rejected by artists, in support of consumers for more choices and better approaches to surround not exclusive to the Dolby "death grip", similar to how the "THX" licensing
grip was cast off previously

we definitely do NOT need yet another format but then, anything more sophisticated than stereo that is NOT atmos is to be applauded!

This is actually a 4.0.4 system which can be 5.0.4 or even 5.1.4 depending on if it’s being used with a Sony TV with a centre input or an optional subwoofer.

It has upfiring speakers in the top of the 4 units for height channels.

Given the cost of it and that it’s an add on and not bundled with any TVs I can’t see a huge number of units being sold.

One of the problems with Atmos is the proprietary delivery formats (there are several) this thing also supports MPEG-H but except for Sony’s music service MPEG-H has zero market penetration outside South Korea.

Sony developed the Christopher Nolan fix: Voice Zoom mode (at 6:20 in the video)

Correct me if Im wrong but this doesn't seem to be a competitor to Dolby Atmos but more of a consumer speaker distribution system. I mean, it's not like studios will ask for a Sony Brava mix as a deliverable, right?


The brava imo is what the market needs. something thats easy to buy and to install and plays back surround on anything. Quad (+sub) imo is way more than enough for consumer setups. Id venture to say that maybe this (or similar) would be ideal .

Yes it’s a consumer speaker set. It plays Atmos and Sony 360 (really MPEG-H) the only interesting thing is that the top of bill description is ‘True Sound of Cinema’ and a little way down Sony’s 360 Reality brand even though it can play Atmos you have to go to the bottom of the page or the tech specs to find any mention of it hence the original poster being confused.

It’s interesting since it means Sony do not place value on the Dolby or Atmos brands for selling this.
