Im researching wwise and fmod. I had read somewhere that a 5.1 mix did rotate with head movement . The other option is to create a binaural mix so at least it sounds in surround on headphones. The client only wants to deal with a vid file with audio embedded. I am really at the very start of this research and the learning curve is steep.
Apparently latest oculus software for Rift and Gear VR will move a 5.1 mix - just seeing if anyone has done this?
Next step is wwise. But even then it seems that a 5.1/7.1 bed is useful as dsp resources can't manage unlimited objects
On the 5.1, it's not "exactly" normal 5.1, I don't do it like a "normal" 5.1, but here are things I'm experimenting with. For the L/R/LR/RR I keep the eq and levels the same (i.e. have all of the sound levels the same, also don't adjust the eq on the LR &RR like you would normally do with 5.1). The reason for this is when you rotate the LR it might become the R, so you want even eq and levels. For the C I think of this more as a omni directional/mono, same with the ".1". So it's not the center between L & R, but is really omni directional (i.e. i think of it as a spherical mic). Also I'm extremely careful of adding reverb, though not perfect, most of the libraries do the reverb (and often the music ducking). Just have fun and don't worry about it, really "mono"/omni is your friend. Also give a look at the new jungle book 3d trailer (of the snake), it's probably more of what your being asked to do. There is a huge variation in what people mean by VR, I'd start off with 360 video just to get the hang of it (this is what the disney clip is doing).
Disney Launches βJungle Bookβ VR Experience | Animation World Network I find it somewhat random getting the jungle book thing running, just try it a bunch of different things(phones/computers).
If someone on gearslutz knows, would be real nice to get a run down of the sound for jungle book, both in the film and the vr stuff.
I btw also get nice surround sound (4 mic) recordings, it's real hard to just take a "film" recording and make it so you can rotate it without it getting phasy.
