VR mixing software
I've had the pleasure of demoing virtual reality headsets a couple times in the past month and I'm fully convinced it will be a huge industry once it gets wider implementation. Especially with YouTube now providing 360 video and VR support, it will only grow.
That being said, post sound for VR is very minimal at the moment. I've been trying to find info on software available and there really isn't much. Most software that exists is proprietary to small companies that specialize in VR content, but that's about it. Oculus has released some software (for free which is amazing) in the form of a plug-in and SDK for Unity, but neither of those work as far as the end user is concerned. There still isn't playback or sound editing support that works for VR.
The issue arises from head tracking. The ability for the viewer to look anywhere at any time is a huge problem sound wise. A sound needs to be in a fixed (or tracked if moving) position within a space, and that has to stay in it's position relative to where it's perceived location is, regardless of viewer perspective.
Does anyone know if any of the sound editing software companies have any plans to develop software for post sound for VR? Like Avid or Steinberg? I guess it's a two fold problem of having the software to edit audio properly, and also have the software to play it back properly.
