I have read and searched but couldn't find a conclusive answer

I use a lot of free plug-ins for my productions, but those free plugs only come in 32-bit windows versions a lot of times.

The new Laptop I picked only comes with a 64-bit windows and no drivers are available for the hardware in 32-bit.

So what works with what properly?!

Win 32-bit | Cubase 64-bit -> doens't work
Win 32-bit | Cubase 32-bit -> not an option, no drivers for computer
Win 64-bit | Cubase 64-bit -> does that work properly with 32-bit plugins?! Do I loose performance?!

edit: Cubase SX3 or Cubase 5. Happy to buy upgrade if it solves the issue

32 bit plugins for the most part will work in 64 bit windows 7. there are a few that have issues with windows 7 and vista period and then a few more with the 64 bit flavor on top of that

cubase 64 or 32 will work on windows 7 64 bit.

Im sort of facing the same dilemma.

From what I've gathered so far is that you should probably run a 32bit Cubase on your 64bit Win OS to make sure you can continue to use plugins that were coded for 32bit OS context.

I just ordered my new 64bit system and I'm dying to see how it works.

waves 4 has issues with windows 7 64 bit version. the combiner/loader thingy for a few plugs fires an error that it can't initialize or find plugs because they get dumped in "Program Files (x86)" folder instead of "Program Files". other than the 64 bit version default folder name changed issue there are a few plugs that just can't function under vista or win 7 32 bit or 64 bit. for the most part though most plugs do work fine, however I am not using cubase but sonar 6 and acid 7. cubase could be another mess but I don't expect it to be, realistically it should be fine. if sony could get it to work, as bad as their software skills are, cubase should also.

The only thing (yet to be overcome) is Steinbergs VSTBridge which is really a temporary solution if you want to run x64 bit OS and Cubase 64. It doesn't really work 100%. That means. Use Cubase 32bit on an x64 OS. And wait untill developers finally move over to x64 bit land.

Thanks a lot for your answers. So I will upgrade to cubase 5, install the 32-bit edition in an Win7-64bit environment and most of my 32bit plugs will continue to work.

use J Bridge if you have any 64 bit plugins ,they will open from cubase 32 but have their own memory space meaning you'll be able to take advantage of lots of ram.

Halion 3.5 x64 and EW play x64 Working well here under Jbridge inside cubase/reaper 32 :D

It's the other way around isn't it? Use 32 bit plug ins inside Cubase 64 bit. Or can you do it both ways?

it works either way. For me running a 32 bit DAW and JBridge for the few 64 bit plugins works the best ATM

I'm running Nuendo 32bit under 64bit OS. Works like a charm.

Cubase will only access 4Gb of RAM, most DAWs aren't up to the task of 64bit just yet, except maybe Sonar

My first post on Gearslutz.

Just to wrap this story up, because I've been reading around and I just want to be sure I get it all right.

There's 3 links in the 32 vs. 64 bit chain. OS -> production software -> Plugins.

Now in order to get the first link working (running a 64 bit OS) you need the proper drivers for your hardware. Correct?

The second link, your software (I'm running Cubase 5) is less of a problem. You can run a 32 bit version of the software in a 64 bit enviroment, HOWEVER; Cubase will not be able to use more then 4 GB of RAM. Correct?

Here's where my first question rises. Say you have 6 Gigs of Ram, you'll need a 64 bit OS to be able to use that RAM in the first place. Now let's say Windows takes 2 gigs (I read somewhere Windows 7 uses about 1,5 so 2 would be a safe estimate) Is it then safe to say Windows allocate the full 4 GB remainder of RAM to Cubase (32 bit)? Or does running Cubase 32 bit on a 64 bit OS give you no advantages whatsoever over running it under a 32 bit OS?

Then the final link are the plugins. As far as I can tell even to this day most plugins are 32 bit, and you can't run a 32 bit plug in a 64 bit Cubase (or any other DAW software package) without bridging. Correct?

I'm trying to geat a broad understanding of the matter, but the core question underneath this all is this; I'm upgrading my DAW, running Cubase 5, and I have a lot of plugins, most of which are (probably) not 64 bit. So I'm trying to find out if plugging in some more RAM and switching to 64 bit is going to do me any good considering I'm fine with switching OS, but want to stick to Cubase (preferably 5) and the plugins I'm using today.

Also is there a list of plugins that do have a 64 bit version?

I'm probably going to use my old DAW as a secondary computer, using FX Teleport to run a couple of more CPU hogging plugs on that PC via LAN. Are there any known issues mixing up 64 bit and 32 bit configured systems?

I'd say you got it pretty much nailed right there... I am running win 7 64 bit, 6gb ram. My allen heath zed r16 has 64 bit drivers I run Cubase Studio 5 in 32 bit, so it gets a max of 4 gig ram, leaving the remaining 2 for the OS and other stuff (for example, any apps you run as rewire clients).

So all my 32 bit plugins work fine, and I don't use (or need?) 64 bit ones at the moment anyway. Job's a goodun.

I know this is a pretty old thread but I've just installed Cubase 5 64 bit on 64 bit Windows 7. Everything worked flawlessly until I loaded a few third party plugins. Just really strange behavior all around; not being able to click on things, not showing up at all sometimes, causing massive CPU spikes. One or two plugins worked fine, but most did not. Even a 64 bit Voxengo plugin caused some CPU problems.

I've just started uninstalling anything that says Steinberg (maybe a little OCD of me), then I'm going to install Cubase 32 and try again. I've got my fingers crossed...

Update: Everything is working just fine in Cubase 32 bit on Windows 7 64 bit. I've tried every plugin I own and installed peripheral hardware. I've also tried opening old projects and starting/recording new ones (just quickly). Everything seems to be working 100%.

W7x64 + C5 64. I use jBridge for 64-bit plugs and for 32-bit plugs (VI's) I want to run as separate processes.. since i have 12G ram, C5 can grab 4G, and then i can have stuff like Superior 2, Ivory, Kontakt, etc have their own bits of ram. Noice!

Geting ready to upgrade to a Rockbox like system next week (ie I7, 64 bit, windows 7, cubase 5 64 bit)...now running 32 os cubase 5 Waves, Diamond Bundle, API Collection, L3 collection, and SSL 4000 Coll., Ultra-Funk (love that bundle)
Have M Audio 1010 delta (rackmount version)
Soundtrac Topaz 24/8 (The Miami Vice Hot Pink knob version...love it)

3 Questions:
1. Is jBridge the best alternative to continue using 32 bit plugs?
Are there any serious lag times or latency issues?

Currently dealing with consistent (when using multiple waves plugins) ASIO spikes causing the normal clicks and farts that are a no-no when clients are in...

2. Is there a plug in that gives the fat warm sound of going from ADAT tape to DAW...cause daddy hasn't found one yet...and many have been named...but for acoustic guitar, banjo, upright bass...it's second to none.

3. anyone tried the VST bridge from Steinberg? How does it compare to J's?

I'm running Windows 7, 64-bit.

Cubase 5.1.1. worked fine in 64-bit mode, but i ended up uninstalling and sticking 32-bit on instead... mainly for collaborations.

Now I've read this entire thread.. so basically what I'm getting is that .. even with my new computer that I'm getting with 12gigs of Ram.. and will be running a 64bit os .. Cusbase 5 in 32bit will only access 4gigs of Ram??? Thats some b/s .. Im pissed b/c whats the point of having a computer with 12gigs or anyone else out there with some serious Ram if Cubase cant access the additional space?

cubase 64-bit ran perfectly on my 64-bit OS. it will use as much RAM as you care to throw at it.

i'm only using 32-bit because

- i have a few unfinished projects and collabs which rely on 32-bit plugs, and i can't be bothered with JBridge
- i don't have more than 4Gb RAM in my machine

Regarding running 32 bit Cubase on 64 bit Win 7:
Does anyone know if this applies to SX3 or is it just for Cubase 5.
What about Nuendo 3 ? Can this also access 4 GB's of RAM with Win 7 64 bit os ?

...what about oldish Nuendo 2?

I am just in the process of reinstalling Sonar 8.5 in 32-bit mode.

I installed it in 64 bit mode only to realize that I couldn't rewire Reason since rewire doesn't have 64 bit support at the moment.

You are obviously a confused and frustrated boy. No one forces you to buy 12gb of ram, you can also get 6gb, wait till the 64bit tech is mature, and then add another 6gb if needed(which I doubt 6gb is enough).

That's the point of being of these forums right? You are now a wise and grown up man, and you can now make your choices.

I run Cubase 5.1.1 32-bit under Windows 7 64-bit. It seems very very fond of crashing, especially upon exiting (fortunately the most ideal time a crash can occur). I also very frequently use up all the CPU power of my i7 920 on 2048 buffer, so I have my doubts about its efficiency. I also have some profile related errors which don't allow me to save template sessions, which are undocumented and appear to occur in rare circumstances (like 1 out of 10 users).

Ok so if someone on an 8gig of RAM machine were running Win7 64 Bit on a 64 bit DAW but they were running vsts that were not made for 64 bit yet does THAT also mean you are not getting all your 8gigs of ram???

1. So if you're running Battery in 32bit (32 is all there is right?) and you have the 64bit DAW and OS on your 8gigs its the exact same as running on 4gigs????

2. If you are running a 32 bit vst like battery on OSX with a 8gig ram setup how much ram is it using?

3. Are there many vsts that are made/upgraded in 64 bit?

4. If you were to bridge them, like with Jbridge, does that just make them only able to install or does that also make them use the full memory?

5. If you are running in win7 64bit, and you have a 64bit daw, but have 32 bit vsts and effects on 8gigs RAM, is that the exact same thing as having Win7 32 bit with a 32bit DAW and 4 Gigs of Ram? Or is there a processing advantage to having a 64bit daw with more RAM. In other words: is 64bit/64bit/32bit/8gigs the exact same as 32bit/32bit/32bit/4gigs because of the VST chokepoint?

Its so ridiculous that 32bit can only access a max of 3 gigs of true ram or whatever.

If i have 8gb ram installed on win7 x64, running cubase 5 32bit, 32bit and 64bit plugins will work? and plugins will be able to use all the 8gb of ram available?
