Just got myself a pair. Wondering what kind of amp I could use under 500$? I am looking at the Crown XLi 800... Any suggestions?

Just get one with about 100w RMS per channel and THD .06% or under say .. That's plenty.

That is exactly the result that I eventually got with hating music after muxing on NS10s and 16 bit digital for 4 or 5 years. It got better when i bought my 2 inch 24 track machine and a pair of Westlake BBSM8s but the damage was done and i sold my studio and went into live sound where at least i wasn't hearing the same songs over and over while punching in bits and pieces. It got so bad for me that i wouldn't listen to the radio and then I didn't want to even hear people talk. I love music way to much to hate music so selling the studio and buying a ski boat gave me the break that i needed and doing live sound again was just what i needed. The thung about NS 10s is that it forces you to clean uo the midrange which is why mixes usually sound good on anything else and usually better on smoother speakers. Tracking on NS10s makes me angry but i can set up a mix faster than on anything else.

I visited the Hansa studios in Berlin last week, where the Bowie „Berlin Trilogy“ albums were recorded. Still fully functional and in business. The mixing desk is often replaced with a DAW the manager told me. Crappy pictures I know. Second one: Me lecturing friends sitting on the brown leathercouch, were Iggy Pop and Bowie used to sit, about the use of the Eventide H3000 on Bowie records. Never seen so many UA 1176 on top of one another in my life.

Hmm.. KRK and NS10 partially blocking the mains, so the “mains” probably are not the primary reference, at least not for whatever project the studio was set up for.
What are those dusty 8x15” main monitors? I suspect they helped deafen a few musicians in the 90s.
Or are they 8x12”?

About 25 years ago I took a project to a studio in Vancouver to be mastered. A couple of the band members attended. I can’t remember the names of the speakers we listened on, but they were all the buzz at the time. The mix didn’t sound quite right but we couldn’t identify the problem and were unable to fix it.
Finally the studio owner told us he had a pair of NS 10s we could try. Immediately the problem was identified progress was made and the mix was substantially improved.
I think that the value of NS 10s might be not only the fast rise time but the very quick settling time of the paper-coned bass/mid driver which means the speaker ‘shuts up’ quickly - gets out of the way of the signal. In other words you hear more signal and less speaker. This is possibly more important than perfectly linear frequency response, which the NS 10 admittedly doesn’t have.

It was intended as a cheap home ’hi-fi’ speaker voiced to sound decent when placed on a bookshelf, bass supported by the wall, and optimally used with the intended companion subwoofer, a twin 7” paper cone servo controlled sub, the YST- SW100, which in its own way is just as fast as the NS10.
It was discovered after the fact to be effective at judging mixes and accidentally became a global icon seen in almost every serious studio in the world.

I'd emphasize the "ALMOST". My studio is VERY serious, and I won't let an NS-10 anywhere near it.

Haha! Indeed. I don't remember if I made a profit or not when I sold mine, but I distinctly remember that I didn't care whether I did or not.

Indeed! The generally faster transient response of infinite baffle speakers like the NS10 helps dampen bass-resonance distortion (after-ring, if you will).

I bought mine just as Yamaha was going out of production on what I believe was the original run in the 90s. A local electronic store was going out of business and they had a pair of them for $230. A pair. New.

As I've written elsewhere, in a lot of ways (if not power hunger), the NS10 speakers seemed like the bookshelf system I had dreamed about as a kid in the sixties and seventies. The Event 2020/bas speakers that took their place as number one here in my songwriting oriented project studio were more like what I dreamed about first using JBL4311s (in so many of the studios I worked in in the '80s) and then my own NS10s. (Me, I definitely liked the NS 10s better than the 4311s. Opinions will differ.)
