To answer your two new questions:

1. I am an actual human being. I don’t have pages, neither does a hardware 76, so I don’t understand a question about “wisdom between the pages”. Can’t help you on that one.

2. How would I use what? You haven’t even specified what clone you have, and you probably do know (or should know) that different 76 versions have different strengths and weaknesses.
Because of this question I looked at your user profile, thinking it might show which 76 clone you have.
Hmmmm…. Your profile doesn’t show you having a 76… or having any equipment of any kind, so that wasn’t helpful.
As a generic but practical answer, try it on whatever needs level control or a change in its dynamics envelope. I liked one of my 76 hardware clones on almost any source, with a little knob-fiddling to fit the program.

I'm not sure how you'd use it to the effect (sorry) youre looking for, Trem, but I def didn't think you were (necessarily) joking the first time around.

But my guess is, clone or no, that's probably a fine compressor.
I haven't loved my experience with their RAM 5000 monitor system, but I took a good hard look at the 500 version of this comp ("grandchild") and was pretty impressed w the sound and functionality.
Chose another 500 stereo comp over it, but it seemed like quite a powerful and (characterful) compressor.

So you did, my apologies. I haven’t tried any Heritage hardware, so there is only my generic answer above.

I don't know why one pass only wouldn't work, but experiment and let us know since most of us don't have that compressor. I wouldn't want to do multiple passes with a Neve on an insert either.

With similar compressors I'd use them on a bus. Gain stage it, use the input gain and other controls to find the place where it sounds the best for the material aka the sweet spot. Pre- and/or post- EQ as needed.

It has 22 tubes and 9 transformers, right? That should be a signal baconizer. Using it very subtly across many tracks/busses should yield that sheen and gluing.

But I think you should experiment with different permutations - there's only so many possible combinations, and let your ears decide.

I recorded some alto flute last night through my 8801.
(that instrument not the easiest to record - particularly in solo form).
Reminded me how much I like both the pre and the eq on that box.
Alto flute has sooo much air (literal air) in the sound, but the 8801 allowed me to quickly dial in something richer and with more body than the sound in the iso room.

But it also reminded me about my earlier question, which was an earnest one.
Is the compressor in the 8801 also the compressor on each channel of the 88r console? Just like the pre?

No doubt - Mr Whoopee would've...as would've Mr Peabody in his own sardonic manner. Bruce Wayne probably would've, the dude was certainly a lunatic fringe audiophile with bottomless pockets.

I'd think the Professor from Gilligan's Island and Mr Spock would've and could've written a thesis about it, with Spock being able to demonstrate it adroitly with his Vulcan Lyre.

The alto flute is a bitch of an instrument. Firstly, until the curved neck ones were introduced, the length of the instrument and spacing of the keys made it hard to play unless one had really large hands, and there's little air resistance so it required a lot of air and air support to maintain a good tone.

While people like Charles Lloyd and Dave Liebman were serviceable on it, they like many others got a less optimal less focused sound than they do on the regular C flute, except for Hubert Laws. Jesus, what a pure and gorgeous sound he got from the alto, just as he has on the piccolo. He was the absolute virtuoso on all the flutes in all genres. Simply the best.

I think every track reduction got run through a 660. When they were doing up to three bounce downs around Sgt. Pepper that could be four passes through a 660 on a single source (including tracking)! If I’m thinking about this correctly…

Edit: Correction, main faders I II went through the Altec rs124 and III IV went through the 660.

I'll try the 8801 again. For whatever reason, that thing sits off in my 'guam' rack. Need to use it more.

Yeah, he was a master at using them, but understandable since he was a flautist with considerable chops as well being a pianist, composer, and arranger.

Speaking of another pianist/composer of note, Bill Evans also played flute - he attended Southeastern Louisiana College on a flute scholarship and played it in the Army band after he was drafted.
