I'm pretty happy with this interface. It is my first recording interface so I do not have much basis for comparison. However I have a good ear and I have been recording great sounds using the Saffire Pro 14. The preamps sound clean and natural. Direct bass sounds great in Logic.

Only minor complaint is that the gain knobs for the preamps seem to have an exponential response curve, meaning the gain increases dramatically towards the end of the pot's range, making it sometimes difficult to dial in the correct amount of gain. The MixControl software is fast and useful and stays out of the way. The interface has been pretty reliable, only failing once or twice under strange conditions, such as being unplugged from firewire momentarily, to work again as soon as the computer was restarted. I found that if I leave the power cable plugged in while unplugging firewire, I will not need to restart the computer to re-plug the device and use it again. Though Focusrite does not recommend hot swapping this interface apparently.

Works great with Logic and Ableton. Four analog outputs for flexible monitoring options, as well as a separate headphone output with its own volume dial that works independently of the main mix. Latency seems not to be a huge problem at all. I'd recommend this to a friend.

This interface is low end price with big end sound. I used to use an Mbox Mini, after that I used a Digi 002. The Pro 14 was less expensive than either of my previous interfaces and had better pre amps and converters.

First of all let's talk about the pres. The pres are nice and clean. They also provide a good amount of gain without adding much noise.

I also love how much it can push my speakers. I've tried other interfaces that can't wouldn't provide as much volume to my speakers but the Pro 14 does great.

The midi inputs work great. Very responsive.

The only thing I don't like about this interface is that I had to load the MixControl software from Focusrite to get it to work. I haven't used the MixControl much. I may like it once I get to know it a little better.

Overall its a great interface. Can't see myself upgrading for a while.

This is my first foray into the audio recording world. I bought this interface because it was cheap! That was the key criteria for me, as I wasn't sure what I wanted yet and decided that I should start out small and then upgrade some time later.

I am impressed. Keep in mind I haven't worked with any other interface extensively, especially not in my environment. However, I can record very easily, and I have done acoustic covers through this interface with excellent results. If anything, the top end is a little harsh and grainy...but that is probably due to my skill level (or lack thereof) more than the interface. Sound quality is great; it doesn't leave me wanting to upgrade straight away.

The one issue I have is with the Saffire MixControl software. It hasn't really dropped out yet but I'm not sure I fully understand what is going on. It isn't intuitive and isn't quite set out like a traditional hardware mixer. And I'm never certain if my session has loaded correctly. Once again this is probably more a fault on my part, but be aware that you might need to spend some time figuring out how this software works.

I think I will definitely have to upgrade though. Simply because the I/O is inadequate for my needs. You get two mic preamps and two line ins, which is 4 analog ins in total. Of course I knew what I was paying for but as a drummer I really would like more inputs so I have more options. If you are considering this and you think you might ostensibly be recording a band or a drumkit in the near future, consider going a step up and paying for the Pro 24, which will give you more I/O.

Overall, I am very happy, it has great sound and works brilliantly as an introduction into audio engineering for me. Although I will be looking to upgrade soon, that is more due to the features and I/O that I require, as opposed to any issues with the actual quality of the unit.

I picked one of these up at the local guitar center right before christmas. my old interface had completely crashed on me, and i needed a new one as soon as possible to keep a project going. I purchased the unit for 200 usd and this why i give it a 10 in the bang for your buck category. The sound quality is good, not mind blowing, but good for the price. The mic pres are quality, and the phantom power is good. It is a desktop unit and takes up a considerable amount of space. One thing i do not like about it is that like with most firewire products it is not hot-swapable, and there is no on/off switch, so the only way to safely unplug it from my system is a shut down, not a deal breaker but can become annoying. Over-all i would definitely recommend this product to people with intermediate level home studios, and the only reason i would get rid of mine is to upgrade.

Focusrite Pro 14

"Quality-wise, these interfaces are the same as each other. The preamp design is the same, and much of the other circuitry is also shared between devices. The Pro 14, Pro 40 and Liquid Saffire 56 utilise the Cirrus CS4272 converter chip, and the Pro 24 and Pro 24 DSP use the TI PCM3168A." This is what Focusrite said about there saffire pro interfaces [ this quote is derived from another user from a previos thread but it is verifiable by Focusrite].

The Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 is essentially the same as the Pro 40 with less ins and outs. When focusing on purchasing an audio interface it is incredibly important to consider it a/d conversion quality and ease of use. This unit works flawlessy with my iMac in logic and I believe it a/d conversion quality is excellent for an interface at this cost. For most interfaces at this price you cannot find a/d conversion this good. The pro 14 employs the same converters as apogee’s original duet.

Its software works seamlessly on mac and logic and is very simple to use. I have never had problems with latency. If you are looking for a good priced interface that offers professional a/d conversion quality then I recommend looking into the focusrite pro 14 and you may even want to consider it over the 24 because of the a/d converters.

Just because I don't have all the money to spend on a recording interface, doesn't mean I don't have an ear for quality. This was the best investment I have made in my studio so far. The pre-amps sound so good, and with the correct engineering, this interface is definitely good enough to give me breathing room to spend money on other products that I am working towards. And when I do upgrade, it will be focusrite.

Haven't had any experience with customer service, because I have had no issues.

Recording times were perfect off the bat to the human ear.

Just an over all great piece of equipment.

Been using one of these for portable location recording direct into a Pro Tools 10 session and having a wail of a time. The bus powered nature of the Saffire Pro 14 is incredibly handy when there's not much power around. It doesn't even draw that much. With a external hard drive and this plugged in to the bus power, the MacBook Pro I've been using was still able to run for in excess of 6 hours on battery.

The mic pre's sound very decent for a box in this price range. very clean until right round at the end. The headphone output needed to be set high for my AKG headphones, but I was never left wanting for more than the maximum setting.

It's low latency too, running competently below 100 samples in 48kHz in Ableton Live, but needing to be pushed up a little for ProTools 10. Again impressive for a device this cheap!

One thing I will concede though is that I found the MixControl software a bit clumsy and awkward to use. But saying that I've come at it expecting the same simplicity as RME's TotalMix FX engine though, which is still for me the best implementation of a router/mixer matrix I've seen in any device.

For the money, I think you could do an awful lot worse than this unit, and I can only assume that the USB Scarlett devices are of a similar ilk.
