Sennheiser Profile Wireless by matt pinchin
As the world of podcasting and content creation evolves, so too does our need for finding the right audio equipment. The need to balance quality with convenience is fundamental for today’s creators. Whether you're out in the field or recording in a bustling environment, you'll want a solution that captures crystal-clear sound without drawing attention to itself. This is where the Sennheiser Profile Wireless system comes into play.
What's it all about
The Sennheiser Profile Wireless consists of a pair of small, wireless clip-on microphones with in-built transmitters and recording capabilities, a dual channel 2.4GHz receiver with 3.5mm mini jack and USB output and a charging bar. This charging bar is a very clever design as it contains various compartments that the transmitters and receiver clip into and contains another compartment that conceals USB and Lightning adaptors and a cold shoe adaptor. This also enables the entire charging bar, once the microphones and transmitter are inserted, to be used as a hand-held microphone/recorder, which is a world first for such systems.
The system has a quoted range of up to an impressive 245 meters with back-up recording also available in each transmitter ‘just in case’, which is activated if the signal is too weak or is interrupted - LED lights up red to show when on-board recording is taking place. They also boast a run time of up to 7 hours of wireless audio, which is increased up to 15 hours when used in conjunction with the charging bar. One note on the charging bar is that it is not merely a convenient storage for charging, it also has in-built rechargeable batteries of its own, thus the charging bar is also a power bank enabling charging, on-the-go. Neat!
Along with the in-built omnidirectional microphones, the transmitters also have a 3.5mm mini jack input for use with lavalier microphones for more discrete use. This is of the locking type to prevent accidental dislodging of the microphone, which is a very welcome and much appreciated design choice.
The receiver has 3.5mm output for camera connection, cable included, a further 3.5mm headphone output and Lightning or USB type C for smartphone, tablet or PC connection. The in-built touch screen display contains all relevant information and navigation screens, and also auto-rotates depending on orientation, which is handy. The screen is clear, bright and packs in a good deal of information. The various menus and functions are accessed by swiping the screen which, given its diminutive size, is surprisingly simple and responsive.
Back-up recording can also be triggered via the receiver and is triggered by a simple double-tap. Each transmitter has 16GB of internal memory, which should be more than enough storage for most duties. In order to access the recordings, simply plug the transmitter to your computer with a USB-C cable and it mounts as a portable disk drive. However, there were some minor glitches when automatic recording took over, so I feel that it would be prudent to record on the internal memory if there’s ever a chance that wireless transmission could drop out. This would act as a safety net, but doing so does reduce battery life to some extent. It is good, then, that a full charge from completely exhausted batteries can be achieved in just 3 hours by simply inserting them back into the charging bar.
Conclusion
The Profile Wireless offers great performance and several extra features that set it apart from the competition. Its back-up recording and smart design enhance its usability and overall value. For those seeking a reliable and user-friendly device the Profile Wireless is an excellent choice. The combination of quality convenience and innovation makes it a standout option in the market.
