When Frank got the first Sony machine I was invited down to his Woodrow Wilson Drive studio. I came up with vocalist Ike Willis.
Frank was recording basic tracks with Bob Stone engineering the Harrison console.
I brought down some basses for them to try out including a very nice fretless Ricky bass and another 8 string.
While tracking I noticed some hiss in the monitors. A track was cut, Sony rewound and played back. I noticed the hiss was muted during rewind. It came back during playback, it was also recorded.
Sitting next to Frank on the rear sofa he turned to me and asked "so what do you think of the new Sony"?
I turned to Frank and said, "Frank, that is the best reproduction of analog hiss I've ever heard".
Then I get that look from him, once again. Of course, everyone else thought I'd get tossed out for that but Frank knew humor pretty well.
