It's a long-standing obsessive tick of Plush's that he'll never be talked out of, so there's no use trying; the more people complain about it, the more he digs into it.

He makes a perfectly valid point when using it, but many of us feel his choice of that word to describe it unnecessarily insults a whole group of mostly proud and hard-working people.

My wife worked for many years at a major big-city religious institution, and they were constantly putting the maintenance staff in charge of "running sound" (including recording); of course the results were usually terrible, they were thrust into a task they received zero training in, and got a nasty tongue lashing on top of it. I'm sure this happens in a lot of places. Those using the term as a pejorative probably couldn't function effectively as a janitor in this place if their life depended on it; they worked their tails off daily at a wide range of largely unrelated tasks.

Some alternatives could be "well-meaning amateurs", "the innocently ignorant", even "arrogant beginners", etc., but he thinks "janitor" is cute. Maybe he got badly scolded by one as a child . . .

I used to be a "real" janitor, many years ago (like 62 years ago). I'd take care of a small New England town's post office 3 days a week. Swept the floor, emptied the thrash, did a little dusting, things like that. Took 2 hours or so each time. Bought my first car from the money earned. A '55 Dodge Crown Coronet, paid $75 for ; got 15 miles to the quart (oil and I am only slightly exaggerating).

Today, I like to think I am an "advanced" janitor. But I don't do sweeping any more.

Funny you mention the post office. I took some arranging lessons with a fantastic jazz saxophonist and composer/arranger (this was decades ago), and he was a mailman during the day. He described it as one of the best day gigs for a musician because it was the same route every day, and back then they walked. So not only did it help keep him in shape and weight in check, but he would often get musical ideas during his route and would write them down in a note book during his breaks. He wrote a lot of music that way. And he was never too tired to go play his gigs at night which were mostly on the weekend, and his weekday gigs were restaurants which started after rush hour and ended before 10 p.m. Damn musician imposter, I’m sure it pissed off the other mailmen

Thanks ! That was our first, but we kinda sticked to the sound, as it is a complete series, and we are wuite happy ! B7 was a 10 mic recording. It is cd and video more or less simultaneously, and we are our own video crew, so … the youtube version has slightly compromised dynamics for the delivery medium, but IMO these are still less compromised than some MAJOR cd releases (even the one playing on gut strings …)

We had as much time for B9 (70 minutes of music) as for the other symphonies, ie 4 1,5 h sessions audio only and 2 1,5 h sessions for video runs. Actually B9 did not have a second run, because it was too tiring for everyone involved, and the last session was 1h instead of 1,5, ie shorter than the piece !

I am glad it will work out as one of the best in this series

This is the reality, the orchestra is not bathing in cash, the sessions were in a concert series with lots of travelling, and a final showing the day after the shoot in another country …

so they decided to do the video run through with full audience, to generate some cash, which made our work even easier
