got my lm yesterday... open the box and notice some sand looking stuff inside the plastic bag the unit is wrapped in.

turns out the stupid moisture control bag broke somewhere in shipping... and what used to be small beads in a mostly rip proof bag, is now sand in a flimsy paper bag, like the ones used for sugar in a restaurant.

so the thing is covered in sand with much finding it's way inside the unit... luckily, it was mostly on the bottom, front, back and sides with very little finding it's way on the top.

so i took pics, messaged the seller, then cleaned it up without getting too into it... but five pesky grains did find their way into the space between the screen and the screen case lens.. so it will need to be completely taken apart to do a deep cleaning.

fired it up, seems to work good.

updated the firmware... no problems.

then proceeded to play.

i like this thing... i like the way it sounds... i like the features... i like the system... it's definitely a cool drum machine.

i have yet to go deep, but for now, diggin it.

i'l find out if i'll have to send it back or not today... i really hope not, as it's back ordered again.

here's a pic of the stupid little sand bag they're now using for moisture control... all in the name of being 100% natural... whatever that means. lol

Perhaps, see if the retailer will let you exchange it for a new one once they have more stock come in. Sweetwater has done that for me before when an out of stock item was received damaged, but functional.

I would be sad about the sand, too.

so playing around with this some more today, made me start looking at other drum machines. lol

the lm is cool for what it is, but it's also kinda limited and a tad wonky system wise... i'm sure they will keep tweaking it in time tho.

started looking at the elektron digitakt II... which is basically double the price, but has sooo many more features... kind of a big learning curve from what i can gather... but prob one for the long term.

idk... i come from an mpc background, but the new akai system just baffles me... my fave mpc was the 2000xl, but i gotta keep moving forward. lol

Yeah, it’s pretty specialised and might not be a good choice for a generalist sampling drum machine. But, if you want that early digital vibe it should be amazing. Can’t wait to get mine.

so, been playing with and comparing to some of my plugs...

i have to say... with the wave designer and analog filter engaged for all drums and set properly... this thing sounds great... beats the plugs i have... they get close, but this has an analog sound to it that feels and sounds better.

i also have to say... there's some bugs yet to be squashed, such as, clicks at the end of a few of the samples in certain tuning spots and the dedicated snare tuning knob also tunes the sidestick.

and some personal quirks, like the pads not being very responsive, which makes the velocity sensitive feature not work well and basically useless, as you have to really beat on the pad to get full volume and hit it hard to get the softest volume... and everything else low response pads present to the game.

also, i think it's just too big for a modern modeling drum machine... many features could have been consolidated... i know they are cloning the linn, but still, it's takes up a lot of desktop space.

having taken it fully apart to clean the sand from the broken moisture pak and seeing what it's made of... i don't really think this thing is worth 400 bones, and think it will come down in price like a lot of b's products do over time.

but it does sound good, and i'm sure b will iron out the bugs in time like they always seem to do.

That might be intentional? They’re both snare drum related? I don’t know what the original did, but it might have been the same?

I can see that, but I also love that the RD-8, RD-9, and LM Drum are the same footprint, and big enough that they’re easy to jam on without knocking the wrong parameter. I’d be fine with a bit smaller, but I really struggle to enjoy some of the tinier synths and drum machines. I am glad it’s big enough to have individual outs (even if they’re 6.35mm). The Roland Boutique series really didn’t gel well with me.

there's always something, but in this case, i think there's a lot of room for improvement.

Here’s what the LinnDrum manual says:

There is no sidestick snare tuning knob. I’d guess it works like the LM Drum?

all drums on the lm are tunable via the home screen.

and if it is intentional that the snare and sidestick share the same tuning knob... it's a stupid "feature"... that makes zero sense.

i sent my unit back for a refund... afaic it's not ready for prime time... i'll wait a year and get it when it's come down in price and all the bugs are worked out, and hopefully the pad sensitivity gets worked out as well.

So you’re saying you can tune the sidestick individually, just not via the snare tune knob? That doesn’t seem like a massive issue?

it was just one of many for me... as i said, i sent mine back, so i'm out.
